Canning heads into the weekend riding a three-game quality start streak thanks in large part to fading his fastball, and if the trend continues against the Mariners, you'll want to give him serious consideration for his Week 12 matchup at Kansas City.... See More ... See Less

Angels' Griffin Canning: Delivers another quality start
Canning allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out four over six innings Sunday against the Astros. He did not factor into the decision. Canning navigated through the Astros' order for his third consecutive quality start. His only blemish for the day was a solo home run given up to Yainer Diaz, but otherwise, Canning did not surrender an extra-base hit. The 27-year-old has given up three runs over his last 19 frames and has been the Angels' most consistent pitcher of late. He's lowered his ERA to a 4.47 to go with a 1.24 WHIP and 43:15 K:BB over 48.1 innings and will look to keep things rolling next weekend against Seattle.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Possible waiver wire pickups
If you're having to go the bargain basement route at starting pitcher, Griffin Canning makes for a more interesting pickup than someone like Ben Lively. You don't have to squint so hard to see the upside here. His overall numbers still leave much to be desired, but he's coming off his best two starts of the season, first two-hitting the Red Sox over seven innings May 23 and then striking out nine White Sox over six innings Monday. Even more impressive than the nine strikeouts were the 20 swinging strikes. In both of these starts, he cut down on his fastball and made better use of what's an impressive secondary arsenal. A former top-100 prospect, Canning made waves as a rookie in 2019 before injuries set him back. He's worth a speculative add in deeper leagues now.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Punches out nine in win
Canning moved to 4-2 after allowing three runs on six hits over six innings while striking out nine in Monday's 6-4 win over the White Sox. Canning gave up one run through three frames before giving up a pair of solo homers later in the contest. He set new season highs with nine strikeouts and 20 whiffs, marking the first time he forced more than eight swinging strikes since April 25. The 27-year-old has allowed at least three runs in five of his last six starts but his ERA dropped Monday to 4.89 through 42.1 frames. Canning is currently projected to start in Houston this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Cruises to third win
Canning (3-2) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out five over seven shutout innings to earn the win over the Red Sox on Tuesday. Canning got all the support he needed when Mickey Moniak gave the Angels a 1-0 lead with a solo home run on the second pitch from Boston starter Brayan Bello. Prior to Tuesday, Canning hadn't completed six innings in any of his first six starts. He also snapped a streak of giving up a home run in five straight outings. The right-hander is at a 4.95 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 30:14 K:BB through 36.1 innings this season. He's tentatively projected for a road start versus the White Sox next week.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Gets little help in loss
Canning (2-2) took the loss Wednesday, giving up three runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings as the Angels fell 3-1 to the Orioles. He struck out four. The right-hander put together one of his better efforts since rejoining the big-league rotation, tossing 67 of 95 pitches for strikes, but the Halos couldn't get much going offensively against Kyle Bradish. Canning has lost two straight starts after winning two straight, and he'll take a 6.14 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB through 29.1 innings into his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Red Sox.... Angels' Griffin Canning: Can't escape fourth inning
Canning (2-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on five hits and one walk over 3.2 innings against Houston. He struck out three. Canning allowed a two-out, solo home run to Yordan Alvarez in the first and proceeded to toss two scoreless frames before getting into trouble in the fourth. It was the first time through five starts that Canning failed to complete at least five innings, and he tied a season worst with five earned runs allowed. As long as Jose Suarez (shoulder) remains on the injured list, Canning should continue to draw starts, even if the results aren't overwhelmingly positive.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Yields five runs but nabs win
Canning (2-0) earned the win over St. Louis on Thursday, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three batters over five innings. Canning fell behind when he gave up two runs in the first inning, but the Angels' offense put up 11 runs over the following three frames to give him a comfortable lead. The right-hander was tagged for a three-run homer in the fourth and allowed two baserunners in the fifth before he was relieved in the sixth. By most measures, this was Canning's worst start of the campaign -- the five runs he allowed were a season high while the three punchouts were his lowest so far -- though it's a positive sign that he managed to hang on for five innings and pick up his second straight win. Canning has gone at least five frames in each of his four starts this season.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Grabs first win of year
Canning (1-0) got the win over the Athletics on Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings. Canning picked up his first win since June 9, 2021 and notched seven strikeouts for the first time since May 26, 2021 after not pitching at all last season due to a stress fracture in his back. He allowed runs to score in the first, fifth and sixth -- he was pulled after a leadoff double. The 27-year-old sports a 4.11 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB over 15.1 innings across three starts and should be due to start against the Cardinals next week.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Sleeper pitchers for Week 5 (April 24-30)
Back from a couple injury-plagued seasons, Griffin Canning's results through two starts have been decent enough, but the swinging-strike rate that would rank fourth among qualifiers hints of even better days ahead. It could begin this week with a dream matchup against the Athletics.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Tosses 100 pitches in no-decision
Canning allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Yankees in 10 innings. He didn't factor into the decision. Canning tossed just 69 pitches in his season debut last Wednesday, but he appeared to be untethered in reaching 100 pitches in his second outing. The right-hander was stung by a two-run Aaron Judge homer in the first inning; however, those were the only runs he allowed, and he didn't give up any additional extra-base hits. Canning didn't pitch in the majors last year, so it was uncertain what his role would be coming into 2023. He may be solidifying a spot in the rotation with two respectable starts during which he allowed a combined four runs while posting an 8:3 K:BB across 10.1 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Will take next turn in rotation
Canning will stick in the Angels' rotation and make his next scheduled start, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Canning made his 2023 debut Wednesday against Washington, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out four batters over five innings. The start was his first in the majors in over a year, as his 2022 campaign was wiped out due to a back injury. The Angels were off the following day, but that won't result in the team skipping Canning's turn in the rotation. The right-hander figures to face off against the Yankees in New York his next time out.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Activated ahead of start
The Angels activated Canning (groin) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Nationals in Anaheim, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports. Though he failed to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster while he was hobbled by a left groin strain, Canning showed enough improvement in the two weeks since spring training ended to join the Angels the first time the team is incorporating a sixth starter into the mix. Canning was given the green light to join the big club after he dazzled in his lone rehab start for Single-A Inland Empire on April 6, when he worked five innings while striking out 10 and allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks. Canning tossed 92 pitches in that start, so he shouldn't face any limitations Wednesday from a workload standpoint.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Slated for Wednesday return
Canning (groin) will start Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. Canning noted Friday that he felt back to full strength following a left groin strain, and this latest news only reinforces his previous statement. He looked strong in his last rehab start, striking out 10 batters and allowing two runs (one earned) over five innings at Single-A Inland Empire. Expect Canning's official reinstatement from the 15-day injured list to happen closer to Wednesday's matchup.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Feels recovered from groin strain
Canning (groin) said Friday that he feels 100 percent healthy, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Canning tallied 10 strikeouts over five innings in a rehab start Thursday with Single-A Inland Empire while scattering two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks. He could feasibly jump into the Angels' rotation next week, though no official decision has been made. The 26-year-old suffered a left groin strain just before the end of spring training.... Angels' Griffin Canning: Rehab start coming Thursday
Canning (groin) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Single-A Inland Empire, the Associated Press reports. Canning will take the hill for the affiliate's season opener after he checked out fine following a bullpen session Monday. Before being shut down late in spring training with a left groin strain, Canning had reached four innings in both of his final two starts in the Cactus League, so he may not require an extensive ramp-up period. Expect him to make at least two rehab starts in the minors before the Angels decide whether to activate him from the 15-day injured list and insert him into the big-league rotation.... See More ... Angels' Griffin Canning: Ready for mound work
Canning (groin) is set to throw a bullpen session Monday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Canning will take the next step forward in his buildup program as he looks to move past the left groin strain he suffered late in spring training. The injury took him out of contention for a spot in the Angels' season-opening rotation, and Tucker Davidson is in line to replace him the first time the Halos opt to add a sixth starter to the mix.... Angels' Griffin Canning: Goes to 15-day IL
The Angels placed Canning (groin) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday. Canning suffered the injury just before the end of spring training and will be sidelined for at least a couple of weeks. Tucker Davidson seems likely to serve as the Angels' sixth starter out of the gate, though Los Angeles doesn't project to need that role filled until mid-April.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Dealing with groin injury
Angels manager Phil Nevin told reporters after Saturday's game that Canning is dealing with a groin injury, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports. Nevin announced that Tucker Davidson has made the club after Saturday's exhibition game against the Dodgers, and that Canning has been dealing with something in his groin since Monday. Nevin doesn't believe the injury will require a stint on the injured list, and said that while the injury isn't alarming, the right-hander will be evaluated Wednesday. Canning still has a chance to be the sixth starter for the Angels, but because of off days that won't be necessary until the middle of April.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Griffin Canning: Vying for final rotation spot
Canning and Tucker Davidson are battling for a role as the Angels' sixth starter, Adrian Garro of MLB.com reports. The two hurlers have been battling it out throughout the spring, and Canning has put up better numbers, posting a 1.32 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB over 13.2 innings versus Davidson's 5.19 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB across 17.1 frames. One thing working in Davidson's favor, however, is that he is out of minor-league options while Canning is not. Whichever pitcher wins the competition may not see action in a starting role right away, as Angels general manager Perry Minasian said Tuesday that the team is "going to take it day by day, but there's a possibility that sixth spot maybe we don't use it right off the bat ... and if we don't use him right off the bat, he's in the bullpen and provides length there," per Garro....
