Reds' Bennett Sousa: Sent to Triple-A
Sousa was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Monday.
Sousa joined the Reds at the end of February after being designated for assignment by the White Sox, and he's now set to begin the 2023 campaign in the minors. He was unable to find much success with Chicago a season ago, finishing with an 8.41 ERA and 1.72 WHIP with a 12:10 K:BB across 20.1 frames, but he should be in the mix for a mid-season promotion.... Reds' Bennett Sousa: Lands with Reds
The Reds claimed Sousa off waivers from the White Sox on Wednesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Sousa, designated for assignment Monday, posted a miserable 8.41 ERA in 20.1 innings with the White Sox last season. Those struggles suggest he'll need to show significant improvement in camp for a shot at Cincinnati's Opening Day roster.... See More ... See Less
White Sox's Bennett Sousa: Removed from 40-man roster
The White Sox designated Sousa for assignment Monday.
Sousa was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for infielder Elvis Andrus, who finalized a one-year, $3 million deal with Chicago on Monday. In his 25 appearances out of the Chicago bullpen in 2022, the left-handed Sousa struggled to an 8.41 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and 12:10 K:BB across 20.1 innings. The 27-year-old will hit the waiver wire, and there could be some interest from clubs looking for a southpaw to compete for a bullpen spot.... See More ... See Less
White Sox's Bennett Sousa: Sent to Triple-A
The White Sox optioned Sousa to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday.
With holds in both of his last two appearances, Sousa appeared to be gaining traction in the late innings for Chicago, but he'll end up being swapped out of the bullpen for Joe Kelly (hamstring), who returns from a stint on the 15-day injured list. Through his 25 appearances with the White Sox this season, Sousa has largely been unreliable, as he's turned in an 8.41 ERA and 1.72 WHIP across 20.1 innings.... See More ... See Less
White Sox's Bennett Sousa: Secures first MLB save
Sousa retired the lone batter he faced via a fly ball to record the save in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Red Sox.
Closer Liam Hendriks was unavailable Sunday after pitching the past two days, and Jose Ruiz was called upon for the save in his place. Ruiz allowed a leadoff double before retiring the next two batters, and Sousa then entered to face pinch-hitter Kevin Plawecki, who was retired on four pitches. Sousa is receiving his first taste of the majors this year and has a 4.82 ERA through 12 outings, and he shouldn't be expected to see high-leverage opportunities with much frequency.... See More ... White Sox's Bennett Sousa: Jumps to 40-man roster
Sousa had his contract selected by the White Sox on Friday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Sousa was a member of Chicago's 60-man player pool for the 2020 campaign but never saw big-league action. The left-hander split last season between Double-A and Triple-A, and he pitched well at both levels with combined 3.61 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 71:20 K:BB over 47.1 innings. He'll have an outside chance at a spot on the Opening Day roster with a strong showing in spring training.... See More ... See Less
