Barria indicated Sunday that he wants to be a starter this season, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Barria has bounced back and forth between a starting and relief role throughout his career, though he came out of the bullpen for all but one of his appearances last season. Perhaps not coincidentally, he put together his best big-league campaign, posting a 2.61 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 54:19 K:BB over 79.1 innings. Nonetheless, Barria has a desire to start again, and he shed 13 pounds of weight during the offseason in part to better his chances of entering the rotation. The Angels don't have a clear No. 6 starter at this point, thus Barria is certainly in the running for the role. However, the team has a variety of other options to fill the slot and intends to deploy its top starters every six days (rather than every six games), so whoever earns the role could be used more as a swing starter than as a traditional piece of the rotation, per Blum.... Angels' Jaime Barria: Avoids arbitration
Barria agreed to a one-year, $1.05 million contract with the Angels on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Barria made his big-league debut in 2018 and primarily worked as a starter when up with the Halos prior to 2022, but he established himself as a solid reliever last season with a 2.61 ERA across 79.1 innings. The 26-year-old should pitch out of the bullpen again in 2023 following his successful transition to relief.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Works out of bullpen
Barria moved to 2-2 on the season after he was credited with the win during his three-inning relief appearance in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over the Athletics in 12 innings. He allowed an unearned run on one hit and no walks while striking out one. In his last time on the mound Saturday in Seattle, Barria worked 4.2 innings as a starter for the first game of a doubleheader. Though the Angels still had a vacancy in their rotation this week, interim manager Phil Nevin opted to give Touki Toussaint the start, while Barria was available in the bullpen. Barria was able to deliver a strong showing in long relief, and Toussaint (six strikeouts over five shutout innings) likely performed well enough to stick around as the Angels' No. 6 starter for at least one more turn through the rotation.... Angels' Jaime Barria: Takes loss in spot start
Barria (1-2) allowed two earned runs over 4.2 innings and took the loss in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mariners. He gave up three hits, struck out three batters and walked four. Barria started Saturday for the first time all season, and although he was fairly effective, he did not make it out of the fifth inning. It remains to be seen if he will start next time through the rotation or if he will resume pitching in a relief role. Through 21 appearances, Barria has a 2.65 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 41:14 K:BB across 57.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Starting Game 1 of twin bill
Barria is starting Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mariners, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. He has gone between two and four innings in each of his last five appearances out of the bullpen, having most recently thrown two innings Wednesday, so this will essentially be a bullpen game. Barria has a 2.55 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 53 innings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Takes loss in relief
Barria (1-1) was tagged with the loss against Boston on Tuesday. He allowed an unearned run on two hits over one inning. Barria entered in the 10th inning and gave up a one-out single that plated the designated runner. He allowed another hit in the frame, but that runner was wiped out on a double play. The right-hander was tagged with his first loss of the season when the Angels failed to score in the bottom of the inning. Barria has worked mostly in long relief this season -- this was his first outing of less than two innings. He has posted a 3.18 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB across 28.1 frames.... See More ... Angels' Jaime Barria: Roughed up in mop-up duty
Barria pitched four innings against the Phillies on Friday, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two. He did not factor in the decision. Angels starter Chase Silseth lasted only 1.2 frames before being pulled, and Barria was asked to churn through four innings despite his own struggles. The right-hander was tagged for three homers -- including two by Bryce Harper -- and yielded multiple earned runs for only the second time this season. Barria's ERA jumped from 1.54 to 3.29 as a result of the poor outing.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Steps up in long-relief outing
Barria tossed 4.1 scoreless innings against Texas on Monday, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out four. He did not factor in the decision. Starter Noah Syndergaard was roughed up for six runs (four earned) over two-thirds of an inning, and after 42 pitches the Angels opted to replace him with Barria. The latter ended up tossing 62 pitches and 4.1 frames in his longest appearance of the campaign. Barria also notched a season-high four strikeouts and kept Los Angeles in the game by completing his fourth straight scoreless outing, all off the multi-inning variety. Since giving up three earned runs over his first 6.2 frames this season, Barria has thrown 11.1 scoreless innings, posting a 9:2 K:BB and 0.71 WHIP over that span.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Notches win in relief
Barria (1-0) earned the win over Washington on Sunday by pitching two perfect innings during which he struck out two batters. Barria entered in the eighth inning with the Angels down by two runs. The right-hander breezed through the frame and retook the mound in the ninth, retiring all six batters he faced between the two innings on only 23 pitches. Barria was then credited with his first win of the campaign when the Angels put up three runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk away with the victory. The 25-year-old is enjoying a strong season in a relief role, posting a 1.98 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB over 13.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Four innings in relief
Barria allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two in four innings in a 10-5 loss Thursday in Texas. Barria entered an 8-2 game in the fifth inning after starter Shohei Ohtani was knocked out early. After giving up two runs in the fifth, Barria settled down and held the Rangers scoreless over the final three frames. The 25-year-old has been relegated to long-relief duties for the Angels to start the season and has yet to walk a batter through 6.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Fails to win starting job
Manager Joe Maddon confirmed Friday that Barria won't begin the regular season in the Angels' starting rotation, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Barria struggled in spring training, as he allowed four runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out six in five innings across two Cactus League appearances. As a result, Reid Detmers will begin the 2022 campaign as the team's sixth starter. It's not yet clear whether Barria will report to Triple-A Salt Lake or whether he'll serve as a long reliever in the majors, but he'll be one of the top options to fill in as a starter if needed.... Angels' Jaime Barria: On IL, done for season
Barria was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right shoulder impingement. The injury was initially described as arm fatigue after Barria exited Saturday's start early, but the shoulder impingement and IL designation will end his 2021 season. Barria posted a 4.61 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 56.2 innings this season, and 11 of his 13 appearances were starts. Sam Selman was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill Barria's roster spot.... Angels' Jaime Barria: Battling arm fatigue
Barria was removed from Saturday's start against the Mariners due to right arm fatigue. Barria delivered two scoreless frames before being lifted from Saturday's contest due to the injury. He allowed three hits without a strikeout or walk. The 25-year-old lines up for one more start next weekend in Seattle, though this arm issue could affect his availability for that outing.... Angels' Jaime Barria: Struggles against Astros
Barria (2-4) was tagged with the loss Monday against the Astros after allowing two runs on 10 hits while fanning five across 5.1 innings. Barria gave up a season-worst mark in hits in this outing, and while he was able to limit the damage once again, he allowed hard contact all game long. He hasn't been able to clinch a win since the beginning of August, posting a 0-4 record with a 5.14 ERA over his last eight appearances. On the bright side, he has given up two or fewer runs in four of his last five starts.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: No-decision Sunday
Barria didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Astros after tossing four innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and four walks while fanning six. Barria hasn't won a game since late July, but at the very least, he managed to extend his streak of appearances where he's been able to limit the damage. He has given up two or fewer runs in three of his last four appearances and owns a 3.38 ERA across 18.2 innings in that stretch.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Loses despite quality start
Barria (2-3) allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out three over seven innings as he lost to the Rangers on Monday. Barria allowed the Rangers to score a run in both the first and second inning while allowing six of eight hits against him during those early frames. Barria then went on to retire 14 straight batters before the Rangers got to him again in the seventh for a third run. The 24-year-old didn't walk anyone for just the second time this year, but Barria has managed to top three strikeouts just twice in eight starts this year. He now owns a 5.16 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB over 45.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Allows two runs in start
Barria allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two across 4.2 innings in the win over the Yankees on Tuesday. He did not factor into the decision. Barria's 4.2 innings was the deepest outing he's had in his past four starts. He surrendered a pair of solo home runs, one by Anthony Rizzo and the other by Gary Sanchez. The 24-year-old has a 5.40 ERA and 1.54 WHIP with a low 4.9 K/9 in 38.1 innings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Exits after 54 pitches
Barria allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out two across 3.1 innings Thursday against the Orioles. He did not factor into the decision. Barria was hardly sharp, but he did manage to limit the damage before he was pulled from the game. He was bailed out by the bullpen, as he exited with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning -- yet no additional runs scored. Barria has worked a combined 8.1 innings while allowing nine earned runs across his last three starts. Overall, he has a 5.56 ERA with a 19:13 K:BB in 34 innings this season.... See More ... Angels' Jaime Barria: Another early exit Friday
Barria (2-2) took the loss Friday, coughing up five runs on six hits over only two innings in a 9-1 loss to Cleveland. He struck out three without walking a batter. After reeling off three straight quality starts once being added to the rotation in late July, Barria has fallen apart and managed only five total innings in his last two outings. The stumbles have inflated his ERA back up to 5.87, but the 25-year-old's rotation spot could still be fairly secure until an injured alternative like Alex Cobb (wrist) or Patrick Sandoval (back) is ready to return.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jaime Barria: Lasts only three innings Saturday
Barria (2-1) took the loss against Houston on Saturday, pitching three innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out one. The right-hander yielded three extra-base hits in his three frames and needed 52 pitches to retire nine batters. He entered the contest having tossed three straight quality starts but submitted his shortest start of the campaign Saturday. Barria has been solid overall since joining the rotation July 31, so the poor outing against one of the league's top offenses shouldn't affect his standing in the Angels' rotation. He's tentatively scheduled to make his next start at Cleveland on Friday.... See More ... See Less
