Player Outlook
Oliver Dunn was a minor-league Rule 5 pick prior to the 2023 season and showed enough in his one year in the Phillies' organization that he's on a 40-man roster a year later, albeit not with Philadelphia, who sent him to Milwaukee in November. Dunn hit .271/.396/.506 with 21 homers and 16 steals in 119 games last season, though plenty of caveats apply to impressive numbers by a 25-year-old at the Double-A level. Dunn also struck out 27.5% of the time, continuing a theme which had seen him strike out 28.6% of the time during his three seasons in the Yankees' organization. He's also a below-average defender at second base who doesn't have the arm for third, so his path to the majors requires him to hit his way there rather than survive as a glove-first utility man. His Breakout Player of the Year at the Arizona Fall League indicates he's trending in the right direction, and the likes of Owen Miller and Andruw Monasterio won't provide the stiffest competition for at-bats. Still, skepticism is warranted, as you won't find many minor-leagues with his combination of age and whiffs who went on to have success at the highest level.

  • Brewers' Oliver Dunn: Sits in second straight

Dunn is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates. Dunn was awarded three consecutive starts at third base this past Wednesday through Saturday, but he was unable to break out of his recent funk at the plate, as he produced just one hit in 11 at-bats. The rookie has posted a .333 OPS over his last nine games and now finds himself back on the bench for the second game in a row. Joey Ortiz still looks to be the Brewers' preferred option at third base for the time being.

  • Brewers' Oliver Dunn: Losing work to Ortiz

Dunn is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. Dunn is on the bench for the third time in four games, with all of his absences coming against right-handed pitching. The rookie looked to have gained traction as the Brewers' everyday third baseman after getting on base at a .400 clip through his first seven big-league games, but he's starting to lose playing time to Joey Ortiz after going 2-for-13 with six strikeouts over his past three contests.

  • Brewers' Oliver Dunn: Not starting Friday

Dunn is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Orioles. Dunn is 1-for-10 with four strikeouts over his past two contests and finds himself on the bench for a second straight game. Joey Ortiz is starting at the hot corner against Baltimore right-hander Tyler Wells.

  • Brewers' Oliver Dunn: Bows out of lineup

Dunn is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. Dunn will take a seat after he went 1-for-10 with four strikeouts through the first two games of the series in Cincinnati, halting some of the momentum he had built during his hot start to the season. Joey Ortiz will replace Dunn at third base Wednesday, but the latter still looks to have a grasp on a regular role at this point.

  • Brewers' Oliver Dunn: Steals bag, goes deep

Dunn went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a stolen base in Friday's win over the Mariners. Dunn launched his first career home run in the fourth inning and then recorded his first MLB steal in the eighth. The 26-year-old was 3-for-12 with a 1:5 BB:K through his first four MLB appearances before Friday's breakout. He'll need to continue swinging the bat well to maintain playing time with the Brewers.

  • Brewers' Oliver Dunn: Taking seat Wednesday

Dunn is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Twins. Dunn had started each of the previous three games, with two of those starts coming at third base. He'll yield the hot corner to Joey Ortiz in the series finale.

  • Brewers' Oliver Dunn: Starting at third base Saturday

Dunn will start at third base and bat seventh in Saturday's game against the Mets. An 11th-round pick in 2019, Dunn reached as high as Triple-A with the Yankees, but he spent last season at Double-A Reading in the Phillies organization. He'll be making his big-league debut Saturday against right-hander Luis Severino after Andruw Monasterio got the Opening Day start at the hot corner. New manager Pat Murphy may just be looking to work everyone in early on this season; it's probably too early to say Dunn is leading a platoon. However, the 26-year-old has some power and speed -- enough to make him interesting in deep leagues if he's playing regularly.

  • Brewers' Oliver Dunn: Makes Opening Day roster

The Brewers recalled Dunn from Triple-A Nashville on Thursday. After slashing .282/.404/.487 with a homer and 10 RBI during Cactus League play, Dunn has officially earned a place on a major-league roster for the first time in his career. The 26-year-old seems destined for a spot on Milwaukee's bench, but his defensive versatility could net him an occasional start versus right-handed pitching.

  • Brewers' Oliver Dunn: Sent to Triple-A

The Brewers optioned Dunn to Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Dunn showed well this spring with an .876 OPS, one home run and four stolen bases over 14 Cactus League contests. The 26-year-old has yet to appear in the majors but seems to have a good shot to debut at some point during the 2024 season.
