    Hofmann was placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract Thursday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports. Hofmann agreed to terms on a one-year contract with EV Zug of Switzerland's top league Tuesday, so this move was expected. Hofmann will likely spend the rest of his playing days overseas.

  • Blue Jackets' Gregory Hofmann: Pens European deal

    Hofmann (personal) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Swiss club EV Zug on Tuesday. Based on the terms of his new deal, Hofmann should be expected to receive his unconditional release by the Blue Jackets in the coming days. The 29-year-old winger appeared in 24 games for Columbus this year in which he tallied two goals, five assists and 23 hits while averaging 12:30 of ice time. While circumstances could change in the future, this will likely mark the end of Hofmann's time playing in the NHL.

The first-year NHLer pocketed up his first career goal midway through the second period, pouncing on a Dallas turnover and leaning into a wrist shot to give Columbus a 2-1 lead. The goal held up as the eventual game-winner for Hofmann, who also assisted on Oliver Bjorkstrand's goal in the opening period. The 28-year-old Hofmann has three points and four PIM in his first six games as a Blue Jacket.

    The Hurricanes traded Hofmann to the Blue Jackets for a 2022 seventh-round pick Saturday, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports. Hofmann was drafted by the Hurricanes in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Draft, but he has never played in North America. According to Aaron Portzline of The Athletic, he'll remain with EV Zug of the Swiss A League for the rest of the season.
