Blue Jackets' Aaron Dell: Gets PTO chance with Columbus
Dell signed a professional tryout agreement with the Blue Jackets on Wednesday, Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers reports.
Dell has played in just 23 games over the last three seasons, and he's posted a 2-16-1 record in that span. The 34-year-old will bring experience to the Blue Jackets' camp, but there's no guarantee he'll be able to win the backup job over Daniil Tarasov or Jet Greaves.

Sharks' Aaron Dell: Sent back to AHL
Dell was sent down to AHL San Jose on Sunday.
The move indicates that James Reimer is back to full strength after he served as Kaapo Kahkonen's backup Saturday. The 33-year-old Dell has played in four games with the Sharks this season, going 0-3-0 with a .913 save percentage.

Sharks' Aaron Dell: Yields two goals in loss
Dell gave up two goals on 27 shots in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Penguins. The third goal was an empty-netter.
Dell didn't have as much to do as Casey DeSmith, who stopped 38 of 39 shots at the other end of the ice. It wasn't a bad outing for Dell, but he's now 0-3-0 with nine goals allowed across three starts and a relief appearance this season. Kaapo Kahkonen (concussion) or James Reimer (illness) could be cleared in time to play Thursday versus the Golden Knights, so Dell shouldn't be expected to get much more playing time during this stint with the big club.

Sharks' Aaron Dell: Gets starting nod
Dell will defend the blue paint during Tuesday's home game versus the Penguins, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports.
Dell hasn't started in an NHL contest since Dec. 4, when he surrendered five goals on 37 shots en route to a 6-3 loss to the Sabres. He'll try to pick up his first top-level win of the year in a home matchup with a Pittsburgh team that's 11-11-5 on the road this season.

Sharks' Aaron Dell: Finishes Sunday's game
Dell stopped eight shots in relief of Kaapo Kahkonen (undisclosed) in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Capitals.
Kahkonen was pulled from the game just after the Capitals' first goal, but he'll get credit for the win since the Capitals didn't score again. Dell was solid in this relief appearance, his third game in the NHL this season. The 33-year-old has allowed seven goals on 76 shots in those outings, and Dell could stick with the big club if Kahkonen is forced to miss any time. The Sharks' next game is Tuesday versus the Penguins.

Sharks' Aaron Dell: Back in NHL
Dell was recalled from AHL San Jose on Saturday.
Dell lost both games with the Sharks in late November and early December, giving up seven goals on 68 shots. He was 7-11-1 with a 3.23 GAA and .898 save percentage with AHL San Jose before his recall.

Dell's second start of the year was worse than his first, and both ended up as losses. He's given up seven goals on 68 shots so far, and the Sharks' porous defense is unlikely to make his job easier as he fills in on the NHL roster with James Reimer (lower body) out. Outside the deepest of formats, Dell is best left on the waiver wire.

Dell's second start of the season will come against his former team. In 12 appearances with the Sabres last year, he posted a 1-8-1 record with a 4.03 GAA and an .893 save percentage. Dell made 29 saves on 31 shots in a 3-1 loss to Toronto on Wednesday during his 2022-23 debut with the Sharks.

A veteran of six seasons, Dell earned a promotion from AHL San Jose to make an emergency start Wednesday. It was his first NHL opportunity since he allowed five goals in a loss to the Senators on Jan. 25. With James Reimer (lower body) sidelined and Kaapo Kahkonen resting after blanking the Canadiens on Tuesday, the Sharks turned to the 33-year-old netminder to get them through the back-to-back matchups. Dell has 50 career wins but just two during his past 19 appearances (2-13-1).

Dell will start on the road against Toronto on Wednesday, Mark Masters of TSN.ca reports.
Dell is up from the AHL because James Reimer is unavailable due to a lower-body injury. Kaapo Kahkonen started in Tuesday's 4-0 win over Montreal, so rather than have Kahkonen play Wednesday on no rest, Dell will make his first NHL start of the season. He has a 3.22 GAA and .904 save percentage in seven AHL contests in 2022-23. Toronto has the 18th-ranked offense with 3.04 goals per game.
