Francisco Cervelli: Announces retirement
Cervelli announced his retirement Saturday, Daniel Alvarez Montes of El Extrabase reports.
The 34-year-old managed quite a successful 13-year big-league career despite frequent battles with concussions. Cervelli won a World Series as a member of the Yankees back in 2009 and went on to record 605 hits and 41 homers. He'll retire with a .268/.358/.382 career slash line, good for a 105 wRC+, quite a respectable number for a catcher.

Marlins' Francisco Cervelli: Transferred to 45-day IL
Cervelli (concussion) was transferred to the 45-day injured list Thursday.
Cervelli was said to have been making progress in his recovery from a concussion he sustained in late August, but his placement on the 45-day injured list will end his regular season. Jorge Alfaro should continue to serve as the Marlins' primary catcher for the remainder of the season with Chad Wallach serving in a depth role.

Marlins' Francisco Cervelli: Shifts to 10-day IL
The Marlins transferred Cervelli (concussion) from the 7-day injured list to the 10-day IL on Tuesday.
The transaction is merely procedure, Cervelli has already missed 10 days with the head injury. Cervelli is said to be progressing in his recovery from the concussion, but the Marlins are thus far unwilling to put a timeline on his return to game action.

Marlins' Francisco Cervelli: Showing improvement
Cervelli (concussion) told a Marlins employee Saturday that he's feeling better in his recovery from a head injury, but the veteran catcher remains without a clear timeline to rejoin the active roster, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports. "It sounds like [Saturday] was a great day for him, and he was upbeat, feeling good," manager Don Mattingly said of Cervelli. "We're hoping that trend continues."
While the news that Cervelli is making positive progress after being diagnosed with a concussion Aug. 23 offers some encouragement about his status, the 34-year-old's lengthy history of head injuries likely means the Marlins won't rush him back into action. Chad Wallach is poised to serve as the primary backup to Jorge Alfaro while Cervelli is on the shelf.

Marlins' Francisco Cervelli: Out with concussion
Cervelli was placed on the 7-day concussion list after Saturday's doubleheader against the Nationals, Andre Fernandez of Sirius XM Radio reports.
Cervelli apparently took a shot to the head and was forced to exit Saturday's nightcap after two frames. Jorge Alfaro is off the injured list and should see the bulk of the starts behind the plate, but the Marlins will still need to add another catcher to the roster Sunday. Considering that Cervelli has a long history of concussions and briefly gave up catching last season after suffering a head injury, he seems likely to miss longer than the minimum seven days.

Marlins' Francisco Cervelli: Makes early exit
Cervelli was removed from Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Nationals for undisclosed reasons, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Cervelli started behind the plate in Game 2 of the twin bill, but he was replaced in the field by Jorge Alfaro after flying out to right field during the second inning. The Marlins should update his status in the near future.

Cervelli went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run during Tuesday's extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays.
The 34-year-old was up to bat with two runners on and two out while trailing by three in the top of the ninth inning, and he went deep in a 3-0 count to tie the game. Unfortunately for Miami, it was all for naught as Toronto walked it off in the 10th inning. Cervelli has a .200/.250/.533 slash line with three homers and seven RBI through eight games this season.

The veteran catcher took Michael Wacha deep in the second inning to open the scoring. Cervelli isn't exactly thriving as the starting backstop for the Marlins, hitting .227 (5-for-22) through six games, but two of those hits have left the yard. Until Jorge Alfaro (illness) has a timetable for his return, Cervelli will continue to draw a heavy workload.

The veteran backstop might have opened the season in the top job, but the delayed start to the campaign should give Jorge Alfaro enough time to fully recover from an oblique strain. Cervelli, who has an extensive concussion history, had a rough start to the spring at the plate before the Grapefruit League schedule was suspended, going 2-for-17 with a double, but his 5:3 BB:K suggests his timing wasn't an issue.
