Olson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against Kansas City. He struck out seven. The 24-year-old allowed just one unearned run, courtesy of his own throwing error, through the first five frames Tuesday. He surrendered his only earned run on back-to-back hits to start the sixth, and despite punching out the next two batters, Olson was lifted after 5.2 innings and 92 pitches, much to the dismay of fantasy managers in leagues that reward quality starts. After surrendering six earned runs to the Cubs on Aug. 22, Olson has held opponents to fewer than three tallies in six consecutive outings, posting a 1.51 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 35:13 K:BB across 35.2 innings. During that same stretch, the right-handed rookie has lowered his season-long ERA from 5.29 to 3.99, considerably increasing his fantasy draft stock for the 2024 campaign.... See More ... See Less

Tigers' Reese Olson: Possible waiver wire pickups
Normally, a rookie pitcher would see his performance slip and his outings shorten as the season draws to a close, but Reese Olson seems to have saved his best for last. After making it six innings in only three of his first 16 outings, he has now done so in four straight, allowing just two hits in each of his last three. While earlier in the year, he was mostly looking to overpower hitters with his slider -- a pitch that generates its share of whiffs, to be sure -- he's taken to throwing his changeup more lately and is having more success on balls in play as a result. Whether it's a tweak that can sustain him for the long haul remains to be seen, but we're not so interested in the long haul right now. We're interested in his matchups next week against the Royals and Guardians, which couldn't be more favorable and couldn't be coming at a better time.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Keeps rolling Wednesday
Olson (5-7) earned the win Wednesday over the Dodgers, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings. Olson was sharp, keeping the Dodgers off the board until Max Muncy's solo home run in the sixth inning. Through four outings in September, Olson has allowed four runs across 25.2 innings, posting quality starts in each appearance. He's now at a 4.13 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 96:31 K:BB through 98 innings over 20 outings (17 starts) this season. He's projected for a favorable home start versus the Royals next week.... See More ... Tigers' Reese Olson: Quality start ends in defeat
Olson (3-7) took the loss Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk over 6.2 innings against the White Sox. He struck out five. Olson was locked in a 0-0 pitcher's duel with White Sox starter Mike Clevinger through six innings but blinked in the seventh when a two-out, two-run homer by Yoan Moncada chased him from the game. After struggling to the tune of a 5.29 ERA over his first 68 big-league innings, Olson has begun to put things together with a 1.50 ERA in his last three starts spanning 18 innings. He'll look to continue this momentum in his next start, currently scheduled for a home matchup against the Reds.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Seven scoreless in win
Olson improved to 3-6 Saturday, allowing four hits over seven scoreless innings in a 10-0 victory over the White Sox. He struck out one and didn't issue any walks. Olson needed just 79 pitches to cruise through seven innings unscathed Saturday, scattering just four singles in a blowout victory. Detroit handed him a 4-0 lead before he took the hill, and the 24-year-old clearly pitched to contact, as he managed only one strikeout in the outing. In the rookie's two starts following his rough outing against the Cubs on Aug. 22, Olson has allowed just one run and posted a 0.97 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB across 11.1 innings. He is currently slated for a rematch with the White Sox at the end of the upcoming week.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Strikes out 10 but takes loss
Olson (2-6) allowed one run on three hits across 4.1 innings and took the loss Monday against the Yankees. He walked four and struck out 10. It was a mixed bag for Olson, who needed 100 pitches to retire only 13 batters. However, the rookie also recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts and limited New York to just the one run, which kept the Tigers in the game until the bullpen faltered. Despite not completing five innings, it was a step in the right direction for Olson after allowing 10 runs over his last two starts (7.1 innings). The righty will look to keep this up and go a bit deeper in the contest during his next outing, which is currently penciled in for Saturday against the White Sox.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Six earned runs in no-decision
Olson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Cubs. He struck out seven. The rookie right-hander stymied Chicago's offense through the first three innings, but the floodgates opened in the fourth when Dansby Swanson and Jeimer Candelario both launched two-run homers. Two more runs were charged to Olson after he was removed with two outs in the fifth, and Olson's failure to complete five innings prevented him from earning the victory. The 24-year-old tossed a gem against Minnesota on Aug. 10, but has allowed 10 earned runs across 7.1 innings in his two starts since then.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Gives up four runs in six innings
Olson did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings against the Marlins. He struck out two and did not record a walk. Olson made his third straight start following the All-Star break and completed at least six innings for the first time this season. However, the right-hander continues to struggle with the long ball, having now allowed four over his past three starts and eight across 11 total appearances. Olson has been able to eat up innings at the big-league level, but overall, his results have been subpar and his role remains in flux.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Falters early versus San Diego
Olson (1-4) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings in a 5-4 loss against San Diego. He struck out five. Three of the five runs Olson allowed were the result of Juan Soto home runs, but the right-hander was able to settle down and toss two scoreless frames before getting replaced. The lack of run support has been a trend for Olson, who's made back-to-back starts following the All-Star break. During those outings, he's allowed seven runs on 13 hits and two walks while posting 10 strikeouts over 10.1 innings, but the Tigers haven't scored with him on the mound in either of those contests. Olson's spot at the back of Detroit's rotation is far from secure, but he figures to get at least one more look with Alex Faedo still at Triple-A Toledo.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Plugged back into rotation
Olson is scheduled to start Sunday's game in Seattle. Prior to the All-Star break, Olson had made his last two appearances in relief, piggybacking starter Tarik Skubal for five innings and two innings on July 4 and July 9, respectively. With the Tigers optioning Alex Faedo to Triple-A Toledo last weekend, the team now has spots available in the rotation for both Skubal and Olson. The latter will take the hill for the series finale in Seattle, while Skubal will presumably start either Monday or Tuesday in Kansas City.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: X-rays clean on knee
X-rays turned up negative Thursday on Olson's left knee, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Olson limped off the field after getting struck by a comebacker in the second inning of his start Thursday afternoon against the Rangers. He told reporters after the game that he expects to take his next scheduled turn in the Tigers' rotation, but the 23-year-old right-hander will be closely evaluated over the next few days before any decisions are made. Detroit's pitching staff has been brutalized by injuries in recent weeks.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Dealing with knee contusion
Olson was diagnosed with a left knee contusion after being hit by a comebacker Thursday versus the Rangers, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. He allowed one run with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings before exiting. It's good news for an initial diagnosis, although it's not clear at this point whether Olson is set to undergo any additional testing. The right-hander's next turn is tentatively scheduled for early next week at home versus the Athletics, but it's too soon to say whether he'll be ready to take the ball that day.... See More ... Tigers' Reese Olson: Exits after being hit by comebacker
Olson was removed from Thursday's start against the Rangers in the second inning after being hit on the left leg by a comebacker, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. He was struck by a 103.5-mph shot off the bat of Josh Smith and immediately crumpled to the ground in pain. Olson eventually walked off the field under his own power following a lengthy chat with Tigers manager A.J. Hinch and the athletic trainer. The right-hander was charged with one run on three hits and a walk before leaving.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Strikes out nine in win
Olson (1-2) earned the win Saturday over the Twins. He allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over 5.1 innings. The lone blemish on Olson's line was a Carlos Correa solo home run in the sixth inning. The win was Olson's first of the year, coming in his fifth major-league appearance. He's kept opponents to two runs or fewer in three of those outings. For the season, he has a 4.74 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 28:6 K:BB over 24.2 innings. Those strong strikeout and walk numbers bode well for future success. The rookie right-hander is projected for a challenging road start at Texas next week. With Matt Manning (foot) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) nearing returns withing the next couple of weeks, it's unclear if Olson has shown enough to stay in the major-league rotation into July.... Tigers' Reese Olson: Hit hard in Tuesday's loss
Olson (0-2) took the loss in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against Atlanta, coughing up seven runs (six earned) on five hits and two walks over 3.1 innings as Detroit fell 10-7. He struck out two. The Tigers handed Olson a 4-0 lead after two innings against Atlanta ace Spencer Strider, but Olson quickly squandered it and got chased after 89 pitches (57 strikes). It was a sudden wake-up call for the rookie right-hander after he'd held the White Sox and Phillies in check in his first two big-league appearances, but his spot in the rotation is likely secure until some of Detroit's injured pitchers begin returning from the IL, with Alex Faedo (finger) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) at the head of the queue. Olson will take a 6.08 ERA and 11:4 K:BB through 13.1 innings into his next outing, which could come at home early next week against the Royals.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Solid in no-decision
Olson, serving as the primary pitcher following an inning from Tyler Holton, allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings in Thursday's 3-2 loss against the Phillies. Olson's certainly held his own through his first two big-league outings -- he's allowed three runs on five hits in 10 innings. The 23-year-old right-hander struggled to a 6.38 ERA in Triple-A this season, so there's some risk here. However, Olson should at least get an extended look in the majors while the Tigers deal with a myriad of injuries in their starting rotation. He'd line up for a tough home matchup with Atlanta in his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Receiving another start
Olson will start Wednesday's game against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Though he ended up taking a loss last Friday in Chicago versus the White Sox, Olson held his own in his MLB debut, striking out six over five innings while allowing two earned runs on just two hits and one walk. With several starting pitching candidates still residing on the injured list, Olson should have a decent amount of leash in the Detroit rotation if he can remain serviceable in his future outings.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Officially promoted for debut
The Tigers recalled Olson from Triple-A Toledo on Friday ahead of his start against the White Sox. Olson will enter the Tigers' rotation in place of the injured Eduardo Rodriguez (finger). The 23-year-old righty doesn't have great stats in Triple-A this season, but he's been able to put it together as of late. Over his last three starts with Toledo, he's allowed two runs in 14.1 innings while maintaining a 22:6 K:BB. Olson collects strikeouts at an impressive rate, but his inability to work deep into games limits his fantasy value.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Cleared for all activities
Olson (abdomen) has been cleared for all baseball activities, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Olson has been slowed by abdominal soreness this spring. It's not clear when he might make his Grapefruit League debut, but it shouldn't be long.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Reese Olson: Set for bullpen session Saturday
Olson (abdomen) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Olson has dealt with abdominal soreness all spring, but a recent MRI came back clean and he's ready to test things out from the bump. The pitching prospect is in line to begin the season at Triple-A Toledo.... See More ... See Less
