  • Phillies' Nick Nelson: Shut down with hamstring strain

Nelson was diagnosed Wednesday with a moderate left hamstring strain, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. It doesn't sound like a huge long-term concern, but Nelson will be shut down for a bit and might run out of time to get fully ramped up for the beginning of the 2023 regular season. The 27-year-old right-hander had been projected for a swingman role out of the gate in Philly.

  • Phillies' Nick Nelson: To start Grapefruit League opener

Nelson will start the Phillies' Grapefruit League opener Saturday against the Yankees, Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Nelson projects to serve as a long reliever and/or bullpen-game starter this year for the reigning NL champs, but there's always the possibility that a camp injury or two could thrust him into the Opening Day rotation. He'll probably go about two innings Saturday and build up from there.

Nelson was added to Philadelphia's roster for the World Series on Friday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Nelson was on the roster for the NLDS but didn't make an appearance against Atlanta. The 26-year-old is likely to work in a low-leverage spot if utilized out of the bullpen.

Nelson was not included on the Phillies' NLCS roster Tuesday. Nelson joined the roster for the NLDS with David Robertson out with a strained calf, but he didn't get the chance to pitch in any of the four games. Robertson is good to go for the NLCS, so Nelson is no longer needed.

Nelson was left off the Phillies' roster for the NL Wild Card Series against the Cardinals on Friday, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. • Phillies' Nick Nelson: Picks up first career save

Nelson recorded the final out of Friday's 5-3 win over the Nationals to collect his first career save. Brad Hand entered the game to begin the ninth inning, but after he surrendered a pair of two-out singles, Phillies interim manager Rob Thomson turned to Nelson to finish up. The right-hander doesn't seem likely to see consistent high-leverage usage going forward, however, as he's posted a 6.75 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and 13:8 K:BB through 13.1 innings since the beginning of August.

  • Phillies' Nick Nelson: Starting bullpen game

Nelson will start a bullpen game for the Phillies against Atlanta on Tuesday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Nelson served as an opener July 7 against the Nationals and struck out two in two scoreless innings. The right-hander should be able to pitch longer than usual since he hasn't made an appearance since July 26, but he shouldn't be expected to handle a significant workload since the Phillies are planning for a bullpen game. Nelson posted a 1.59 ERA, 15:5 K:BB and 1.24 WHIP in 11.1 innings over eight appearances in July.

Nelson opened Sunday, allowing a run on three hits and a walk while striking out four in two innings in a 4-3 loss in St. Louis. He did not factor into the decision. After striking out the side in the first inning, Nelson allowed singles to three of the first four batters in the second, leading to the Cardinals' first run. It was the first time the Phillies used him as an opener all season. Including Sunday, the 26-year-old has allowed just one run in his last 9.2 innings while posting an 11:3 K:BB across five outings. He'll likely move back to his middle-relief role in his next outing.

Cristopher Sanchez will serve as the primary pitcher against St. Louis.

The Phillies will carry 10 relievers to start the season, but Nelson will have to pitch much better than he has in the past if he's to keep his job once rosters shrink back to 26 players in early May.
