Felix Hernandez: Parts ways with O's
Hernandez (elbow) opted out of his minor-league contract with the Orioles on Monday and became a free agent, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
After joining the Orioles for camp as a non-roster invitee, Hernandez appeared to be tracking toward a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but an elbow injury suffered two weeks ago scuttled those plans. Though Hernandez has since resumed throwing off a mound, he apparently wasn't interested in sticking around at the Orioles' alternate training site to complete his rehab program. Once healthy, Hernandez could look to rejoin the Orioles if no better offers emerge for the 2010 American League Cy Young winner.

Orioles' Felix Hernandez: Another bullpen session on tap
Hernandez (elbow) was scheduled to throw another bullpen session Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Hernandez's sore right elbow responded well to Wednesday's throwing session, so he'll get back on the mound again with the hope of gaining clearance to face live hitters before camp closes. The right-hander doesn't look like he'll have enough time to guarantee his availability for Opening Day, but he could still be a candidate to eat innings as an opener or primary pitcher when Baltimore first requires a fourth or fifth starter on April 5 and 6, respectively. The Orioles have thus far named only three pitchers to the five-man rotation (John Means, Matt Harvey and Bruce Zimmermann).

Orioles' Felix Hernandez: Throws successful bullpen
Hernandez (elbow) threw a successful bullpen session Wednesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Hernandez has been slowed recently due to elbow discomfort, but he advanced to playing catch early in the week and was able to throw off a mound Wednesday. Manager Brandon Hyde was encouraged by Hernandez's successful throwing session. He'll play catch Friday and be evaluated afterward, but Hyde isn't yet sure when Hernandez will be able to return to game action.

Hernandez was pulled from his previous start last Tuesday with elbow discomfort, but he wasn't shut down completely for long. He's played catch for the past few days and is nearly ready for mound work, though time is getting tight for him to be cleared to play by Opening Day. King Felix hasn't been officially ruled out for the start of the season, though he's not guaranteed to make the club even if healthy, as he's merely in camp as a non-roster invitee.

Orioles' Felix Hernandez: Won't get MRI
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Hernandez doesn't plan to schedule an MRI after exiting Tuesday's start against the Rays with right elbow discomfort, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
Baltimore hasn't updated Hernandez's original diagnosis from Tuesday, so the right-hander looks to have avoided structural damage or a severe strain of the elbow that would normal warrant further examination. Hyde said that Hernandez received treatment Wednesday, so the veteran looks like he may just get some rest for the next few days before the Orioles determine whether he's fit to resume his throwing program. Hernandez still looks unlikely to be ready for Opening Day.

Orioles' Felix Hernandez: Exits start with apparent injury
Hernandez was removed Tuesday in his Grapefruit League start against the Rays with an apparent injury, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. He struck out two over a perfect first inning before exiting the contest with an athletic trainer by his side.
After recording eight outs in his previous start March 11, Hernandez was expected to work three or four innings Tuesday before his outing was cut short. The Orioles will likely provide an explanation for his removal after the game. Hernandez is competing for a back-end spot in the Orioles' Opening Day rotation.

Orioles' Felix Hernandez: Latches on with Baltimore
Hernandez signed a minor-league deal with the Orioles on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
The 34-year-old is a non-roster invitee for spring training and will receive $1 million if he cracks the big-league roster. Hernandez was in competition for a spot in Atlanta's starting rotation in spring training last season, but he opted out of the 2020 campaign in early July. He last pitched for the Mariners in 2019 and had a 6.40 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 57:25 K:BB over 71.2 innings. Hernandez should have a strong chance of earning a spot in Baltimore's starting rotation.
