Texans' Blake Cashman: Secures one-year extension
The Texans signed Cashman (knee) to a one-year contract extension Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Cashman will now be tied to Houston through the 2023 season after being traded to the team from the Jets this offseason. The 26-year-old linebacker has been a consistent contributor on special teams while playing a limited defensive role over 10 games this season, recording 13 tackles, one sack and one pass defended. Cashman popped up as a non-participant with a knee injury on Wednesday's injury report, so he could be in jeopardy of missing just his second game of the season Sunday versus the Browns.

Texans' Blake Cashman: Clear of injury report Wednesday
Cashman (concussion) was not listed on the Texans' practice report Wednesday.
Cashman was ruled out for Houston's win over Jacksonville on Oct. 9 after sustaining a concussion in the previous week's game. However, the outside linebacker appears to have cleared protocols following the team's Week 6 bye, which would make him available for Sunday against the Raiders. Cashman has recorded six tackles and one pass defended while playing 37 of his 106 snaps on defense this season.

Texans' Blake Cashman: Won't play Sunday
Cashman (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's contest against the Jaguars.
Cashman was diagnosed with a concussion during the team's Week 4 loss to the Chargers and didn't practice at all ahead of Week 5. The 2019 fifth-round pick had played only 37 defensive snaps over the past three weeks, so his absence shouldn't have a major impact on Houston's defense, though Garret Wallow may see a few extra snaps after playing a season-high 20 defensive plays against the Chargers.

Texans' Blake Cashman: Doesn't participate in walkthrough
Cashman (concussion) was listed as a non-participant during Wednesday's walkthrough, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Cashman was ruled out for the remainder of the team's Week 4 loss to the Chargers after suffering a concussion and remained sidelined for the team's first practice ahead of Week 5. If he's unable to clear concussion protocols before Sunday, Neville Hewitt would be a likely candidate to step into an expanded role against Jacksonville.

Texans' Blake Cashman: Stays out Sunday
Cashman (head) is downgraded to out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Chargers.
Cashman was pulled from Sunday's contest to be evaluated for a potential concussion, though it's unclear if he was officially diagnosed with one. With the fourth-year linebacker out, Neville Hewitt figures to see increased usage against the Chargers.

Texans' Blake Cashman: Being evaluated
Cashman has exited Sunday's game against the Chargers to be evaluated for a concussion.
Cashman is considered questionable to return. However, if he did suffer a concussion he'll certainly be out for the remainder of the game. He had recorded one tackle in Sunday's contest before suffering the injury.

Texans' Blake Cashman: Drawing praise at practice
Coach Lovie Smith said Wednesday that Cashman has "come from nowhere" during training camp.
Smith's comments suggest Cashman has put the groin injury that kept him out of the last 10 games of the 2021 season behind him. Despite having drafted Alabama's Christian Harris in the third round of this year's draft, the rebuilding Texans don't necessarily have an excess of talent at linebacker behind Christian Kirksey and Kamu Grugier-Hill, meaning Cashman has a legitimate shot to see a notable role in 2022.

Texans' Blake Cashman: Traded to Houston
The Texans acquired Cashman (groin) from the Jets on Wednesday in exchange for a late-round draft pick, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Cashman has played only 14 games across his first three seasons in the league, and he'll make his way to Houston for the final year of his rookie contract. He recorded 40 total tackles and a half-sack in seven games as a rookie in 2019 but has only nine tackles in the past two years while missing significant time due to injuries. Cashman sat out the Jets' final 10 games of the 2021 campaign due to a groin injury.

Jets' Blake Cashman: Finishes season on IR
Cashman (groin) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Dec. 24 and reverted to injured reserve, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
Cashman spent just over two weeks on the list after testing positive for the virus Dec. 8. Since he had already suffered a season-ending groin injury in late October, his placement on the virus list didn't have an effect on his recovery timeline.

Jets' Blake Cashman: Tests positive for COVID-19
Cashman's (groin) placement on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday was a result of a positive test for the virus, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.
Before landing on the list, Cashman had been residing on injured reserve with the groin injury he sustained Week 7 in New England. Since the Jets had yet to designate the reserve linebacker for return from IR prior to him landing on the list, Cashman likely won't be cleared to resume practicing this week even if he's vaccinated and clears all COVID-19-related protocols in short order. With that in mind, Cashman is safe to rule out for Sunday's game against the Saints, though he could have a chance to return at some point during the final four contests of the Jets' season.
