  • Bears' Ryan Griffin: Trending backward

Griffin (Achilles) was a non-participant in practice Thursday.

Griffin was unable to suit up in Week 3, but he did log a limited practice Wednesday, suggesting he may be ready for a Week 4 return. However, Griffin's participation level went backward to a DNP on Thursday, leaving the veteran tight end's status in greater doubt. If he is unable to play Sunday against the Giants, Trevon Wesco will likely see increased opportunity once again.

  • Bears' Velus Jones: Stays limited in practice

Jones (hamstring) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.

The rookie wideout has now turned in four straight limited practices dating back to last week, but he might need to put in a full session Friday to avoid taking an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Giants. Even if he remains limited Friday, Jones could still have a shot at making his NFL debut this weekend, though he likely wouldn't hold a prominent role on offense right away. The rookie is expected to make his initial impact on special teams as a return man.

  • Bears' David Montgomery: Sidelined for another practice

    Montgomery (ankle/knee) was a non-participant in Thursday's practice.

Sidelined for the second practice in a row, Montgomery is looking uncertain to play in Sunday's game against the Giants while he manages the two lower-body injuries. Unless Montgomery is able to get in some on-field work Friday, he'll likely sit out the Week 4 contest, which would pave the way for Khalil Herbert to take on a workhorse role out of the Chicago backfield.

  • Bears' Jaylon Johnson: Doesn't practice Wednesday

    Johnson (quadriceps) didn't practice Wednesday.

Johnson was ruled out for Week 3 after landing on the injury report last Thursday with a quadriceps issue. The severity of the issue remains unclear, but it's concerning to see him still sidelined Wednesday. If he's ultimately ruled out for a second straight game, Kindle Vildor should continue seeing an increased workload in Johnson's absence.

  • Bears' Roquan Smith: Dealing with quad injury

Smith was a limited participant at practice Wednesday due to a quadriceps injury.

Smith was dominant during the Bears' Week 2 win over the Texans, recording 16 tackles and an interception, but he presumably picked up a quadriceps injury as well. The extent of the issue remains unclear, but his participation at practice Thursday and Friday should provide further clarity on his status for Week 4.

  • Bears' Ryan Griffin: Listed as limited participant

Griffin (Achilles) was a limited participant during practice Wednesday.

Griffin presumably picked up the Achilles issue during the team's Week 2 loss to the Packers and didn't practice at all before being ruled out ahead of Week 3. His return to practice is encouraging, but he likely still has a few more hurdles to clear before he's ready to return to game action.

  • Bears' Velus Jones: Another limited practice

Jones (hamstring) was a limited practice participant Wednesday.

A rookie third-round pick, Jones has yet to make his professional debut due to the hamstring injury. He told Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com on Wednesday that he "definitely had a setback" during his recovery, but he felt "really good" during the Bears' first Week 4 practice. Jones likely suffered the setback during his limited practice to begin Week 2 prep, after which he didn't get back on the field for more than a week. He's now logged three consecutive limited sessions dating back to last Thursday, which indicates he may be trending toward his first appearance of the season Sunday at the Giants.

  • Bears' David Montgomery: Skips practice Wednesday

Montgomery (ankle/knee) didn't take part in practice Wednesday.

Montgomery exited this past Sunday's win against the Texans in the first half, leaving him with a paltry three carries for 11 yards and no targets. Afterward, head coach Matt Eberflus termed Montgomery "day-to-day," and he provided that same label for the running back's status Wednesday, according to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic. Montgomery will have two more practice sessions to make an appearance this week before the Bears potentially give him a designation for Sunday's contest at the Giants. If Montgomery is limited or sidelined this weekend, Khalil Herbert again will get work in the Chicago backfield, which amounted to 22 touches for 169 yards from scrimmage and two rushing scores in Week 3 in place of Montgomery.

  • Bears' Dante Pettis: Runs wind sprints in Week 3 win

Pettis went without a target in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Texans.

Since turning his lone target in the Bears' Week 1 win over the 49ers into a 51-yard touchdown reception, Pettis has now gone without a look in the passing game for two straight games. His lack of involvement isn't due to a lack of snaps, as he's handled 56 percent shares in both of the last two weeks as the No. 3 wideout behind Darnell Mooney and Equanimeous St. Brown. Mooney and St. Brown have combined for just eight catches themselves through three games, and until the Bears are willing to loosen the reins on quarterback Justin Fields a bit more, target volume looks like it'll be difficult to come by for any member of the Chicago passing game. Fields hasn't attempted more than 17 throws in any of his three starts on the season.

  • Bears' Joe Thomas: Joins active roster

The Bears signed Thomas to the active roster from the practice squad Tuesday, Larry Mayer of the team's official site reports.

Thomas joins the active roster because of the placement of Byron Pringle (calf) on IR. He played 46 percent of defensive snaps Week 3 versus Houston in place of Matt Adams (hamstring), racking up five tackles (two solo).
