Islanders' Kyle Palmieri: Will miss first two preseason games
Palmieri (undisclosed) won't be re-evaluated until after the Islanders' preseason games Tuesday against the Rangers and Wednesday versus Philadelphia, coach Lane Lambert told Andrew Gross of Newsday on Saturday.
There is no timetable for Palmieri's return, but it seems he won't get into a preseason contest until Friday versus the Rangers at the earliest. Palmieri recorded 16 goals and 33 points in 55 appearances last season.

Islanders' Kyle Palmieri: Two points including winner Friday
Palmieri scored the game-winning goal on the power play and added an even-strength assist Friday in a 5-1 victory over the Hurricanes during Game 3 of the Islanders' first-round series.
Both points came in the third period as the Isles broke open a 1-1 tie and set a record for the fastest four goals in playoff history. Palmieri now has back-to-back two-point efforts, giving him significant momentum heading into Game 4 on Sunday as his team looks to even the series.

The Islanders as a team are an aging forward group, and Palmieri just turned 32 years old. He has only scored 34 goals over his last 156 games. The team may be looking in the wrong direction if they expect Palmieri's career path to change course suddenly.

Palmieri helped out on the game-winning goal in this one, and his steady contributions have led to two goals. six assists and a plus-5 rating over the past 10 games. Palmieri's ice time has steadily increased since the Isles acquired Bo Horvat in a trade with the Canucks -- the former logged 18:13 versus the Penguins -- and he seems to be a mainstay on the No. 2 power-play unit. There certainly are flashier players than Palmieri, but he's been quite consistent in 2023.

Palmieri was a full participant in practice Wednesday, but it was as an extra forward and not part of any line. Since he wasn't skating on any specific line and then was seen after practice working with Ross Johnston, another frequent scratch would seem to indicate that Palmieri won't play Thursday. Perhaps he will make that return Saturday versus the Canadiens.

This likely means that Palmieri won't play versus the Canucks on Tuesday. The Islanders will probably want Palmieri to participate in at least one full practice before he appears in a game. This would mean that assuming he can practice Wednesday, he could play in one of the back-to-back games the team plays versus the Oilers on Thursday and the Flames on Friday.

Palmieri could take to the ice on Saturday, but it was after practice. It would seem unlikely that the team, even as banged up as they are, would put him in a game until he can participate in a full practice and prove he can take a hit. The Islanders are off Monday. If Palmieri came through his light skate Saturday without a problem and can practice Monday or Tuesday, then he could return to the lineup Tuesday night versus the Canucks.
