Capitals' Joel Edmundson: Out 4-6 weeks after surgery
Edmundson (hand) had surgery Tuesday to stabilize a fractured hand and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.
Edmundson sustained the injury during an intrasquad scrimmage over the weekend. The 30-year-old was acquired from the Canadiens over the summer to provide a physical element to the Capitals' defense corps but will be forced to wait to make his debut. Alexander Alexeyev is likely to see a regular role alongside Trevor van Riemsdyk on the third pairing in the interim.

Capitals' Joel Edmundson: Being evaluated
Edmundson won't take part in Tuesday's practice because of an upper-body injury, Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic reports.
Edmundson is scheduled to meet with Washington's medical staff Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury. The 30-year-old blueliner was injured in Sunday's scrimmage. Edmundson, who was acquired from the Canadiens in July, registered 13 points, 149 blocked shots and 112 hits in 61 appearances last season.

Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Ready to rock
Van Riemsdyk is fine after taking a puck off his right wrist in Sunday's 4-3 shootout loss to Buffalo in preseason action, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports.
Van Riemsdyk was back on the ice for Tuesday's practice. He generated 23 points and 160 blocked shots in 75 games last season.

Capitals' Sonny Milano: Pots goal Sunday
Milano tallied a goal, four shots and two hits during Sunday's 4-3 preseason loss to the Sabres.
Milano netted the tying goal in the third period before the Capitals fell in the shootout. The 27-year-old acquitted himself well in his first season in Washington, posting 11 goals and 33 points in 64 games. With a three-year, $5.7 million contract extension in hand, the Long Island native will be counted on to be a sparkplug in the Capitals' top-nine and is worth a flyer in deeper formats as long as he can stay healthy.

Capitals' Jimmy Huntington: Cut from camp
Washington released Huntington on Monday to AHL Hershey training camp.
Huntington agreed an AHL contract with the Bears back in July for the 2023-24 season. He had been attending camp with the Capitals on a tryout basis. Huntington notched nine goals and 28 points in 51 contests last campaign with AHL Milwaukee.

Capitals' Nicolas Aube-Kubel: Pots goal Sunday
Aube-Kubel tallied a goal, four PIM and two shots on net during Sunday's 4-3 preseason loss to the Sabres.
Aube-Kubel opened the scoring for the Capitals in the first period. The 27-year-old is once again expected to serve as a bottom-six contributor for Washington, but a lack of consistent ice time and opportunity won't do much for his fantasy value in standard formats.

Van Riemsdyk (undisclosed) left Sunday's preseason contest against the Sabres, Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic reports.
Van Riemsdyk tallied an assist before leaving the game Sunday. An update on his status should be available in the coming days before Washington's preseason tilt with the Red Wings on Thursday. The veteran blueliner scored a career-high 23 points in 75 games last season.

Sandin's leg injury was not believed to be serious. He sustained the injury at the IIHF World Championship in a game against Team USA while competing for Sweden. Sandin has breakout potential for the Capitals this season. He's expected to fill a top-four role and feature on the second power-play unit.

Lindgren (upper body) is listed as healthy on the Capitals' training camp roster released Tuesday.
Lindgren missed some time late in 2022-23 with the injury, but it was never expected to keep him out of action to begin this season. The 29-year-old enters 2023-24 as Darcy Kuemper's presumptive backup. Lindgren played in a career-high 31 contests a year ago and should see similar usage, giving him some late-round fantasy appeal in deep formats.

Capitals' Max Pacioretty: Timeline unclear
Pacioretty (Achilles) is not expected to be available for the start of the 2023-24 season, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.
Pacioretty has suffered two torn Achilles tendons since the summer of 2022. Washington head coach Spencer Carbery told NHL.com on Aug. 22 that he doesn't have an exact timetable for Pacioretty's return, but the 34-year-old winger may end up missing the first month or two of the 2023-24 campaign. Pacioretty was limited to just five games last season with Carolina, scoring three goals and posting 16 shots on net. He signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Capitals in July.

Capitals' Tom Wilson: Inks seven-year contract extension
Wilson signed a seven-year, $45.5 million contract extension with Washington on Friday.
Wilson has one season remaining on a six-year, $31.02 million contract he signed in July of 2018. The combative winger played in only 33 games last season, missing the first 42 games after offseason knee surgery. Wilson ended the season with 13 goals and 22 points. He ended the season on a high note with a four-game goal scoring streak. If he's able to stay relatively healthy, look for Wilson to contribute 20-plus goals, 40-plus points, at least 90 PIM and 200-plus hits in 2023-24.

Capitals' Andrew Cristall: Signs entry-level deal
Cristall agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with Washington on Thursday, according to Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic.
Cristall had 39 goals and 95 points in 54 WHL games with Kelowna in 2022-23. The Capitals took him with the No. 40 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. While Cristall has plenty of offensive upside, he'll need more time to develop before he'll have a real shot of cracking Washington's roster.
