Avalanche's Riley Tufte: Slides to center
Tufte worked as the center on the second line during Friday's practice, Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now reports.
Ryan Johansen, who is pegged as the second-line center, moved to up the top line while Nathan MacKinnon was in Halifax, where the Mooseheads retired his jersey. Tufte lined up with Artturi Lehkonen and Valeri Nichushkin, and the 6-foot-6 forward didn't look out of place at his new position. Coach Jared Bednar acknowledged a hole down the middle and said he'll look at multiple options to play center in the bottom six. "If he has the ability to make a move into the center position, I'd like to experiment with it because I like him as a player," the coach said of Tufte, who has an opportunity to earn a larger role for the Avalanche after appearing in 10 NHL games with the Stars over the previous two seasons.

Stars' Riley Tufte: Elevated from minors
Tufte was promoted from AHL Texas on Wednesday.
Tufte's promotion could be an indication that Joe Pavelski (undisclosed) won't be ready to face Minnesota in Wednesday's Game 2 matchup. For his part, the 25-year-old Tufte has played in just three NHL contests this season, nothing one shot, six hits and a minus-1 rating while averaging 7:57 of ice time. Even with his call-up, Tufte may not crack the lineup versus the Wild, with Joel Kiviranta or Fredrik Olofsson more likely to slot into the lineup.

Stars' Riley Tufte: Still searching for first AHL goal
Tufte is yet to score a goal through his first 35 games this season with AHL Texas.
Tufte does have eight assists. While the lack of production is highly concerning, it shouldn't come as a surprise. Tufte's game has been trending in the wrong direction since the day Dallas took him 25th overall back in 2016. It's entirely possible the Stars never would have even offered him an entry-level deal had it not been for his draft pedigree. Tufte won't turn 22 years of age until April, but he's a non-prospect until further notice.
