Top P.J. Walker News

  • Browns' PJ Walker: Elevated to active roster

Walker was elevated to the Browns' active roster Saturday, Jake Trotter of ESPN.com reports.

The move comes with Deshaun Watson (shoulder) listed as questionable for Sunday's contest against the Ravens. If Watson is ruled out, Walker would fill in as the backup quarterback while Dorian Thompson-Robinson would be in line for his first NFL start.

  • PJ Walker: Joins Cleveland's practice squad

The Browns signed Walker to their practice squad Wednesday.

Walker spent the offseason and training camp with the Bears but was ultimately waived over the weekend. The 28-year-old immediately becomes one of the more experienced quarterbacks on an NFL practice squad, as he's previously seen action in 15 games -- including seven starts -- with the Panthers over the past three seasons. He's completed 131 of 228 career pass attempts (57.5 percent) for 1,461 passing yards, five touchdowns and 11 interceptions while carrying 18 times for 50 yards.

  • PJ Walker: Let go by Chicago

The Bears informed Walker that he will be waived Sunday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.

Walker signed a two-year, $4.15 million contract with the Bears this offseason, and he appeared to earn the team's No. 2 quarterback spot given his play this preseason. However, it looks like his performance across these contests wasn't enough to separate him from journeyman backup Nathan Peterman and undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent. Even if the Bears opt to keep just two quarterbacks on their active roster, it's likely that Peterman and Bagent now will slot into these roles behind Justin Fields. If he's not claimed off waivers, Walker should attract a solid list of teams interested in adding him as a backup quarterback prior to Week 1.

  • Bears' PJ Walker: Quiet outing Saturday

Walker completed one of four passes for six yards during Saturday's 24-17 preseason loss to the Colts.

The Bears sat most of their starters, including quarterback Justin Fields, in preseason Week 2. As a result, Walker directed the offense for the first two possessions, which resulted in no points and a pair of punts. He also was sacked twice for a combined loss of nine yards. He seems to be secure in his standing as Chicago's No. 2 QB, but Nathan Peterman and undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent still are around to challenge Walker.

  • Bears' PJ Walker: Solid hold on backup job

Walker is expected to be the backup to Justin Fields when the regular season begins, Adam Jahns of The Athletic reports.

Walker has had struggles during training camp, but his experience gives him an edge over Tyson Bagent and Nathan Peterman. Should Fields miss time, the likely drop off to Walker may be significant.
