Byron Jones: Officially let go Wednesday
The Dolphins released Jones (Achilles) on Wednesday, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
Jones was officially cut with a failed physical and will be designated as a post-June 1 transaction, thus saving the Dolphins $13.6 million in cap space. The 29-year-old originally joined Miami on a massive five-year, $82.5 million deal ahead of the 2020 season, though he missed the entirety of the 2022 campaign while recovering from left Achilles surgery. He'll finish his time in Miami with just 14 passes defended and two interceptions across 30 regular-season appearances. Jones will now have an opportunity to revive his career elsewhere heading into his age-30 season.

Byron Jones: Set to be released
The Dolphins informed Jones (Achilles) on Tuesday that he'll be released March 15, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Per Schefter, the move will be designated as a post-June 1 cut and will save Miami $13.6 million. Jones missed the entire 2022 campaign due to left Achilles' surgery and was still unable to run or jump as of late February, but he's not planning on retiring despite an uphill battle in his recovery. Jones will have a chance to test free agency this summer, but he might have to settle for a one-year prove-it deal.

Dolphins' Byron Jones: Significant recovery hurdles remain
Jones (Achilles) said via his official Twitter account Saturday that he "can't run or jump" after having missed the entire 2022 season due to left Achilles' surgery.
Jones is not retiring, as ESPN reports, but it appears he's still facing an uphill battle to return to the playing field. The 2018 Pro Bowler hasn't appeared in NFL action since undergoing Achilles' surgery last March to address a lingering injury, though it was initially reported the Dolphins expected him to be ready for training camp. This offseason, Miami can save $13.6 million in salary cap space by trading or releasing Jones after June 1.

Dolphins' Byron Jones: Not returning for Week 12
Jones (Achilles) is not expected to return to practice this week, Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Head coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that he's "hopeful and optimistic" that Jones will return and play at some point this season, though he will not be back at practice until at least next week. The cornerback has been inactive for the entirety of the campaign to this point as he continues to recover from offseason Achilles surgery. His next chance to suit up will come Dec. 4 against the 49ers, though that seems very unlikely considering he's yet to practice this year.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday that the cornerback's recovery from offseason ankle surgery is "not progressing as fast as we'd hoped." Jones will miss a fifth consecutive contest to start the season, and it's unclear when he'll return to practice. In his prolonged absence, expect Nik Needham and Kader Kohou to continue garnering increased roles in Miami's secondary.
