  • Steelers' Elijah Riley: Returns from IR

Pittsburgh activated Riley (ankle) from injured reserve Friday, and he has no injury designation ahead of Saturday's contest against the Bengals, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.

Riley sat out for the four-game IR minimum after sustaining an ankle injury in Week 11 against the Browns. He's primarily played on special teams but could see defensive snaps with Minkah Fitzpatrick (knee) and Trenton Thompson (neck) both ruled out for Sunday's game.

  • Steelers' Elijah Riley: Gets designation to return

Pittsburgh designated Riley (ankle) for return from its injured reserve list Tuesday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.

The move opens a 21-day window during which the Steelers can activate Riley before they'd be forced to shut him down for the rest of the season. Their injury reports during the week will give some indication of whether he might be able to play in Week 16 versus the Bengals.

  • Steelers' Elijah Riley: Moves to IR

Riley (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Monday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.

Riley suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday's loss to the Browns and was likely looking at a multi-week absence. With his move to IR, the Army product will now be guaranteed to miss at least four weeks before he can return to action. In a corresponding move, Trenton Thompson was signed to the team's 53-man roster after being elevated from the practice squad each of the last two weeks.

  • Steelers' Elijah Riley: Looking at multi-week absence

Riley suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday's loss to the Browns, according to head coach Mike Tomlin, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.

Riley headed to the locker room after suffering the injury and was unable to return to the contest. His likely absence for the week ahead will be another blow for Pittsburgh's secondary, which has lost Keanu Neal (ribs) to injured reserve and remains without Minkah Fitzpatrick (hamstring) for the time being.

  • Steelers' Elijah Riley: Hurts ankle Week 11

Riley injured his ankle in Sunday's game against Cleveland and has been ruled out for the remainder of the contest, Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com reports.

Riley headed to the locker room after suffering the injury, and he was ultimately unable to return. The veteran safety had seen more work on defense of late in the absence of Minkah Fitzpatrick (hamstring). Riley has also been a core special-teamer for the Steelers throughout the campaign.

  • Steelers' Elijah Riley: Picked up by Steelers

Riley was claimed off waivers by the Steelers on Wednesday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports.

Riley was signed by the Jets off the Eagles' practice squad last season but was waived earlier this season. He re-upped with the team on a one-year deal in April after starting seven games last season. Riley will now get an opportunity to make an impact with the Steelers.

  • Jets' Elijah Riley: Practices fully Wednesday

Riley (concussion) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.

Riley missed last week's win over the Jaguars, but he's evidently recovered from the concussion he suffered in Week 15 against the Dolphins. The 23-year-old safety out of Army should retake his starting role Sunday against the Buccaneers barring a setback.

  • Jets' Elijah Riley: Officially out Sunday

Riley (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Jacksonville, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Riley had to be stretchered out of last week's loss to the Dolphins, so the fact that he was ever in consideration to play this Sunday is a positive. That said, the free safety didn't practice at all this week and has not yet cleared the league's concussion protocol, so New York will be without his services Sunday. With Sharrod Neasman (illness) and Ashtyn Davis (illness) still in COVID-19 protocols, it's unclear who the Jets will line up at safety this weekend.

  • Jets' Elijah Riley: Enters concussion protocol

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Monday that Riley has been placed in the NFL's concussion protocol, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Riley's diagnosis comes as no surprise after he was stretchered off the field upon suffering a neck injury in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins. Fortunately, he checked out fine after the contest and had full motion of his extremities, so clearing the five-step concussion protocol will be his main focus as he aims to return to game action. Saleh said he expects Riley to return at some point over the Jets' final three games, perhaps even as soon as the team's Week 16 matchup with Jacksonville.
