Player Outlook
The Panthers targeted Mingo as their first hand-picked wide receiver to pair with Bryce Young's skill set as a passer in this new regime. That kind of draft capital tells a story, and the Panthers obviously liked what they saw on film from Mingo because his production was inconsistent at best and nonexistent at times during his collegiate career. If Mingo develops a great rapport with Young in training camp and preseason, he will be worth the mid-to-late round gamble. Mingo should come off the board in the back end of the first-round in rookie-only one-QB drafts and the early second round in two-QB and Superflex rookie drafts.

  • Panthers' Jonathan Mingo: High target count

Mingo caught three of eight targets for 26 yards in Monday night's 20-17 loss to the Saints. Mingo had a catch of 22 yards, marking Carolina's longest passing play of the game. Although he hardly gained any yardage on his other two grabs, Mingo's eight targets trailed only Adam Thielen among Panthers pass-catchers. That share of looks came despite No. 2 wideout DJ Chark making his season debut, which should boost optimism over Mingo's usage as his rookie campaign progresses.

  • Panthers' Jonathan Mingo: Makes two grabs

Mingo caught two of five targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Falcons. Mingo made a small impact in his NFL debut, which isn't surprising considering quarterback Bryce Young passed for just 146 yards. With DJ Chark (hamstring) out, Mingo played 87 percent of Carolina's offensive snaps, working alongside Adam Thielen and Terrace Marshall at wideout. The rookie's outlook would figure to take a slight hit if Chark returns for Week 2's matchup versus the Saints.

  • Panthers' Jonathan Mingo: Set for big role with Chark out

Mingo is slated to take on an expanded role in his NFL debut Sunday against the Falcons, as fellow wide receiver DJ Chark (hamstring) was ruled out Friday, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports. Adam Thielen (ankle) is questionable, leaving Mingo as the top fully healthy wide receiver for the Panthers heading into Week 1. This will also be the first NFL start for rookie quarterback Bryce Young, whom the Panthers traded up to draft first overall in 2023 before selecting Mingo in the second round, 39th overall.

  • Panthers' Jonathan Mingo: Week 1 Waiver Priority List

Adam Thielen will likely be the No. 1 receiver for the Panthers this season, but Mingo is definitely worth targeting with a late-round pick in all leagues. And he's someone to add with 1 percent of your remaining FAB. D.J. Chark (hamstring) is already hurt, and Mingo will hopefully develop a quick rapport with fellow rookie Bryce Young. You'll have to be patient with Mingo early in the season, but he could become a quality playmaker as the year goes on.

  • Panthers' Jonathan Mingo: Catches one pass

Mingo caught one of two targets for 14 yards in Friday's preseason game against Detroit. Adam Thielen went for 4-48-1 on five targets, with Mingo being the only other player to see more than one look from QB Bryce Young on the first-team offense's two drives. The rookie wideout appeared to play nearly all the snaps with the starters, which perhaps isn't surprising given the absences of DJ Chark (hamstring), Terrace Marshall (back) and Laviska Shenault (concussion). The previous preseason usage suggests Mingo would have a top-three role even with everyone healthy, though perhaps as the No. 3 behind Thielen and Chark. Expect Mingo to get plenty of playing time Week 1 at Atlanta, even if Chark is back in the lineup.

  • Panthers' Jonathan Mingo: One grab against Giants

Mingo caught one of two targets for 15 yards in Friday's preseason loss to the Giants. His first grab of the preseason came on the Panthers' second drive, as the rookie wideout caught a slant from Bryce Young with enough yardage for a first down, bounced off a would-be tackler and gained some extra real estate. Mingo's size and athletic profile made him a second-round pick in 2023, but after two quiet exhibition performances, he hasn't shown much to indicate he's ready to turn those traits into consistent NFL production.

  • Panthers' Jonathan Mingo: Starter on initial depth chart

Mingo is listed as a starting wide receiver on the Panthers' first unofficial depth chart of training camp, Augusta Stone of the team's official site reports. Carolina made Mingo a second-round pick in this year's draft based on his athleticism rather than his production at Mississippi. Prior to 2022, he had never topped 400 yards or scored more than three touchdowns in any of his three collegiate seasons, but in his final year he erupted for 51 catches, 861 yards and five TDs in 13 games. Mingo then proceeded to measure in at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds with a 4.46 40 time, 39.5-inch vertical and 129-inch broad jump at the combine. While he joined a Panthers receiving corps that already featured veterans Adam Thielen and DJ Chark, plus 2021 second-rounder Terrace Marshall, Mingo finds himself ahead of Marshall on the depth chart before the team's first preseason contest, despite having consistent issues with drops so far in camp, per David Newton of ESPN.com.

  • Panthers' Jonathan Mingo: New target for Bryce Young

The Panthers selected Mingo in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, 39th overall. Carolina gets a passing game weapon to pair with first overall pick, Bryce Young. A fellow SEC product, Mingo never truly dominated at Mississippi but he did break out as a senior with 51 catches for 861 yards and five touchdowns on 92 targets. His selling point has less to do with his production and more to do with his athleticism. At 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds with 10.38-inch hands, Mingo ran an impressive 4.46 in the 40 and his jumps ranked in the 89th percentile among receivers. As it stands, Adam Thielen, DJ Chark and Terrace Marshall project as the top three wideouts, but each of them are far from sure things to earn starter-level snaps all season. With that, there's a chance Mingo works his way into the target rotation as the 2023 season unfolds.
