Player Outlook
Garoppolo was supposed to be Josh McDaniels' replacement for Derek Carr in Las Vegas this year. He still may be, but offseason foot surgery has left Garoppolo's health in doubt. The veteran has only played 16 games once in his career and he's only played double-digit games three times. We won't advise drafting him in one-QB leagues even if he's 100% in the preseason, but you can't even consider him a two-QB starter until he's a full go. If the Raiders add another veteran QB in training camp, you can take that as a sign things may not be going well in Garoppolo's recovery. If Tom Brady shows up in silver and black, we'll know for sure.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Remains in protocol

Garoppolo (concussion) remains in the NFL's concussion protocol Wednesday, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports. Garoppolo, who didn't practice Wednesday, per Tashan Reed of The Athletic, underwent concussion testing after Monday's loss to the Steelers, and he will have to clear the league's five-step concussion protocol in order to suit up Sunday against the Chargers. Coach Josh McDaniels said veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O'Connell will both be preparing to start in the event that Garoppolo is unavailable. Any of the three quarterbacks could still wind up being named the starter for Sunday's game, though Garoppolo would be the first choice if cleared to play.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Adds/Streamers (QB Preview)

Garoppolo is getting the ball out on time in Josh McDaniels offense, which is taking away the threat of the pass rush. This week he's at home against a Pittsburgh defense coming off an emotional win on a short week. This game has low-key shootout appeal, and Garoppolo is a solid streamer, especially if he gets Jakobi Meyers back.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Turns in full practice

Garoppolo (ankle) was a full practice participant Thursday. The Raiders haven't revealed whether Garoppolo's listed ankle injury is related to his surgically repaired left foot, but his upgrade from limited practice participation Wednesday to full participation Thursday erases any concern about his availability for Sunday's game in Buffalo. Garoppolo proved to be an effective game manager in the Raiders' 17-16 win over the Broncos in Week 1, committing just one turnover (an interception) while completing 20 of 26 pass attempts for 200 yards and two touchdowns to go with an additional nine yards on the ground.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Gets first win with LV

Garoppolo completed 20 of 26 pass attempts for 200 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 17-16 win over the Broncos. Garoppolo had a successful debut with the Raiders after signing a three-year, $67.5 million contract this past offseason. The 31-year-old looked healthy following offseason foot surgery, completing 77 percent of his passes and even taking off for an eight-yard scramble to extend a drive. Garoppolo got off to a good start against a tough defense, but he doesn't excite as a starter in fantasy. He will face another stiff test with his new club when the Raiders stay on the road to take on the Bills in Week 2.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Crisp in brief action Saturday

Garoppolo completed all four pass attempts for 39 yards in the Raiders' 34-17 preseason win over the Rams on Saturday night. Garoppolo was in for the Raiders' opening possession and led a crisp nine-play, 68-yard march, during which he completed passes to four different targets. It was the veteran's official Raiders debut and, consequently, the first opportunity to prove his health after last season's foot issues. Garoppolo gave way to Brian Hoyer after that first drive as head coach Josh McDaniels clearly looked to limit his exposure, but it's certainly possible he gets more run in the preseason finale against the Cowboys next Saturday night.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Won't play in preseason opener

Garoppolo won't play in Sunday's preseason opener versus San Francisco, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports. Garoppolo was suited up for warmups, but he'll ultimately watch the exhibition from the sidelines, along with WRs Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow and TE Michael Mayer. The veteran quarterback's next chance to make his Raiders debut will come Saturday versus the Rams.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Could be released without penalty

Garoppolo's three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders contains a clause that would allow Las Vegas to release him without penalty if he's unable to pass a physical due to his surgically repaired foot, Tashan Reed and Vic Tafur of The Athletic report. Garoppolo fractured his left foot while playing with the 49ers in early December, then underwent surgery in March, shortly after he finalized his contract with Las Vegas. According to a waiver and release clause in the deal, Garoppolo acknowledged the risk of further injury while continuing to play upon his return from surgery, and he also waived any responsibility on the part of the Raiders, who can terminate his contract with no further obligation or financial ramifications. The waiver becomes null and void if Garoppolo passes a physical at any point during the 2023 season, however. While the terms of the deal give the Raiders an easy out to move on from Garoppolo if his recovery doesn't proceed as anticipated, the team won't have much in the way of appealing alternatives. The Raiders are left with 37-year-old journeyman Brian Hoyer, fourth-round rookie Aidan O'Connell and 2022 undrafted free agent Chase Garbers as the other signal-callers on the roster. Meanwhile, Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Teddy Bridgewater and Joe Flacco are the most experienced options among an uninspiring crop of quarterbacks on the free-agent market.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Recovering from March surgery

Garoppolo had foot surgery in March, shortly after signing with the Raiders, Tashan Reed and Vic Tafur of The Athletic report. Coach Josh McDaniels didn't provide a timeline or details, though he told reporters Garoppolo's absence from spring practices was expected. The Raiders apparently discovered that the QB needed surgery during a physical exam, after he'd avoided going under the knife in December when he suffered the left foot fracture. The 31-year-old never returned from the injury last season but might've been able to do so had the 49ers won one more game and reached the Super Bowl. His new team is confident Garoppolo will be ready for Week 1, and it helps that both he and backup quarterback Brian Hoyer have played in McDaniels' offenses before.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Set to join Vegas

The Raiders agreed Monday to a contract with Garoppolo (foot), Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Per Schefter, Garoppolo's looming deal with the Raiders is a three-year, $67.5 million pact that includes $34 million guaranteed. In his new locale, Garoppolo is in line take over Las Vegas' starting QB slot, which had been vacated by the departure of Derek Carr, who is now with the Saints. In the process, Garoppolo is reunited with head coach Josh McDaniels, who worked with the signal-caller earlier in his career while the two were both with the Patriots.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Run in Bay Area likely over

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that he doesn't expect Garoppolo (foot) to be a member of the 49ers for the 2023 season, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. It's been a whirlwind year for Garoppolo, who was shopped last offseason with the 49ers set to move on to 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance under center. However, Garoppolo's health was in limbo due to his recovery from surgery on his right throwing shoulder, and he eventually remained with the team after interested organizations settled their respective quarterback situations. When Lance suffered a season-ending right ankle injury Week 2, Garoppolo was pressed into action and held on to the starting role until he suffered a broken left foot Week 13, which allowed for the emergence of seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy (elbow). While both Lance and Purdy enter this offseason with health concerns, San Francisco's brass is comfortable with the pair moving forward, meaning Garoppolo will be allowed to test free agency once March arrives.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Super Bowl return still possible

Garoppolo (foot) has already been ruled out for Sunday's NFC Championship Game, but the quarterback left the possibility open of returning for the Super Bowl if the 49ers advance, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. Garoppolo's rehabilitation from a broken foot has been progressing well -- despite his unavailability for Sunday's tilt against the Eagles -- with the quarterback's only limitation being his ability to sprint at full speed. The veteran signal-caller will need the 49ers to advance past Philadelphia on Sunday in addition to his foot fully healing before Feb. 12 for him to suit up again this season. If that scenario unfolds and Garoppolo is good to go for the Super Bowl, he would likely be the backup to Brock Purdy given the latter's success this postseason.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Not returning Sunday

Garoppolo (foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's NFC Championship Game at Philadelphia, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Garoppolo had a small chance to gain clearance for this contest after suffering a fracture in his left foot Week 13. However, he underwent an X-ray on Tuesday and proceeded to sit out all three practices ahead of Sunday's contest. The 49ers thus will need to advance to the Super Bowl for Garoppolo to have a chance to be active again this season. In the meantime, seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy will continue to lead San Francisco's offense, with Josh Johnson backing him up.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Not expected to practice this week

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Garoppolo (foot) isn't expected to practice ahead of Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Eagles, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Garoppolo underwent an X-ray on Tuesday, and while the results of the test remain unclear, the veteran quarterback looks like he'll still need some more time to heal before being cleared for game action. Though reports earlier in the week suggested Garoppolo was making great strides and would have a chance to be the backup behind Brock Purdy against the Eagles, the former appears set to remain sidelined for at least one more week with his broken left foot. In the meantime, Josh Johnson should continue operating as the No. 2 quarterback behind Purdy, who will attempt to move past a lackluster performance against Dallas in the divisional round.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Not returning Sunday

Garoppolo (foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's divisional-round contest against the Cowboys, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. Having said that, coach Kyle Shanahan told David Lombardi of The Athletic on Friday that Garoppolo was able to resume working out on the side at practice this week, while adding there's an "outside chance" the quarterback is active if the 49ers advance to the NFC Championship Game. Garoppolo has entered the late stages of his recovery from a broken left foot that he sustained Week 13 against the Dolphins, which has caused him to miss the last six games. In the meantime, San Francisco's offense will continue to be directed by Brock Purdy, with Josh Johnson backing up the rookie seventh-round pick.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Cast removed

Garoppolo (foot) has had his cast removed and now will be in a walking boot for at least the next week, Fox's Jay Glazer reported on Saturday's pregame show. The Niners will examine Garoppolo again after he can shed the walking boot, with the hope that he can play in the playoffs. It's not a lock that he'll replace Brock Purdy even if healthy, but the team would like to have that option.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Unlikely to return for playoffs

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that he isn't optimistic about Garoppolo (foot) returning during the playoffs, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. The 49ers are in good position to qualify for the postseason even with backup Brock Purdy taking over at quarterback, but the team doesn't seem as though it'll be counting on Garoppolo, who only has an "outside chance" to be ready to go by late January, according to Shanahan. The good news for Garoppolo is that he avoided a Lisfranc injury and ligament damage after exiting early in Sunday's win over the Dolphins, though his recovery from a broken foot is expected to take around two months despite not requiring surgery to address the injury. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Tuesday that Garoppolo might be able to return in 7-to-8 weeks if all goes well, which would line up with a return for the divisional round or NFC Championship Game. Making a deep run in the playoffs won't be an easy task now that the Niners are down to their third starting quarterback of the season.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Avoiding foot surgery

Garoppolo won't need surgery on his broken left foot, which has been confirmed to not be a Lisfranc injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. If his recovery goes well, Garoppolo may be able to return in 7-to-8 weeks. This is the first indication that Garoppolo isn't out for the season and instead could be a candidate to be available for the 49ers at some point in the playoffs. The divisional round of the playoffs lines up with the seven-week mark reported by Schefter, but as long as Garoppolo is in recovery mode, rookie seventh-round pick Brock Purdy will be San Francisco's starting quarterback, with Josh Johnson backing him up after the team signed him off the Broncos' practice squad.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Good to go

Garoppolo (knee) is practicing without limitations Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Listed as full participant to start the week, Garoppolo will make the start this Sunday against Miami in a game that should be a higher-scoring one than the 49ers' norm. The big injury question for San Francisco this week is at running back, where Elijah Mitchell (knee) is out for the next couple months and Christian McCaffrey (knee) is uncertain to play. If McCaffrey is sidelined, it could work in Garoppolo's favor from a fantasy perspective, though head coach Kyle Shanahan typically isn't one to completely write off his running game.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Sit Him (Lineup Decisions)

With the best yards after-the-catch weapons in the NFL by a wide margin, Garoppolo has worked himself into the QB1 mix, but he's not matchup-proof. In Week 12, the Saints present a middling matchup for the 49ers pass game and the likelihood of a gamescript that works against him with the 49ers entering this game as heavy favorites. If the 49ers jump out to an early lead, it could be the Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell show. Dave would start Geno Smith and Lamar Jackson over Garoppolo.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Sleepers (Start/Sit)

Garoppolo was a letdown in Week 10 against the Chargers when he failed to pass for a touchdown for the first time all season and scored just 15 Fantasy points, which was his first game with fewer than 20 points since Week 4. He should rebound this week against the Cardinals, who have allowed three of the past four opposing quarterbacks to score at least 24 Fantasy points. Garoppolo has also scored at least 22 Fantasy points in four meetings in a row with the Cardinals, and he can be used as a low-end starter in all leagues in Week 11.
