Player Outlook
A mid-August injury might derail Montgomery's playing time for the second season in a row. In the wake of news on Montgomery's issue, the Patriots signed Ezekiel Elliott to a contract. Elliott is expected to help shoulder the backfield workload with Rhamondre Stevenson, and Montgomery was unable to make the Patriots' initial 53-man roster. Montgomery shouldn't get picked in any league and may only have minimal value as a waiver add if he makes it on the field this season.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Three snaps versus Miami

Montgomery was on the field for three of 74 snaps on offense in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Dolphins, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. Montgomery, who continues to work behind Rhamondre Stevenson (54 snaps) and Ezekiel Elliott (22 snaps), didn't record a carry or catch (on one target) Sunday and will remain off the fantasy radar as long as his change-of-pace role with the Patriots is limited.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Catches two passes in Week 1

Montgomery logged seven of a possible 80 snaps on offense in Sunday's season-opening 25-20 loss to the Eagles, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. Montgomery, who was brought back to the team's 53-man roster Saturday, worked behind Rhamondre Stevenson (58 snaps) and Ezekiel Elliott (28 snaps) Sunday en route to carrying once for seven yards and catching two of his three targets for nine yards. There could be weeks where the versatile Montgomery is more involved in the Patriots' passing game, but for now he's off the fantasy radar as long as the team's top duo is available.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Joins 53-man roster

New England signed Montgomery to its active roster Saturday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. The veteran running back was waived and added to the Patriots' practice squad this offseason before signing to the team's active roster. Montgomery will join Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott in New England's backfield ahead of the coming season.

  • Ty Montgomery: Joins Pats practice squad

The Patriots signed Montgomery to their practice squad Wednesday. New England will also retain fellow running back Kevin Harris on the practice squad, with he and Montgomery providing the organization with some familiar depth behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott. Montgomery has a chance to enter the Patriots' change-of-pace mix this coming season in the event that he's promoted to the active roster, a plausible outcome unless further backfield options are brought in.

  • Ty Montgomery: Let go by Patriots

The Patriots released Montgomery on Tuesday. With J.J. Taylor and Kevin Harris also having been cut by the team Tuesday, Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott are temporarily the only running backs on the team's 53-man roster. Look for some more moves to arrive in the coming days, and with that in mind it's possible that Montgomery could rejoin the mix once the cut-down dust settles.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Back at practice

Montgomery (leg) was present for practice Tuesday, but didn't participate in team drills, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports. Now that he's back on the practice field, the versatile Montgomery will look to secure a change-of-pace role behind top back Rhamondre Stevenson and newcomer Ezekiel Elliott. The addition of Elliott solidifies the top of the Patriots' RB depth chart, which leaves Montgomery to compete with Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor for slotting behind the team's top duo.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Still not practicing

Montgomery (leg) remained sidelined at Thursday's practice, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports. Montgomery's continued absence doesn't help his chances of securing a key change-of-pace role out of the gate this season, and once he's back on the field he'll need to compete for depth chart slotting with Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor. In any case, the Patriots' addition of veteran Ezekiel Elliott to a backfield led by Rhamondre Stevenson represents a hit to Montgomery's fantasy prospects ahead of Week 1.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Not warming up Thursday

Montgomery (leg) wasn't spotted in warmups ahead of Thursday's preseason opener against the Texans, Chris Mason of The Springfield Republican reports. Montgomery has been missing practice of late, so his looming absence Thursday isn't surprising. Look for Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor to handle the bulk of the team's backfield snaps versus Houston.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Still not practicing

Montgomery (leg) didn't practice Tuesday, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports. With Montgomery continuing to miss practice, the versatile back isn't likely to suit up for the Patriots' preseason opener Thursday against the Texans. Once he's able to rejoin practice, he'll look to carve out a change-of-pace role in a backfield led by Rhamondre Stevenson, fighting for backup snaps with second-year pros Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Continues to miss practice

Montgomery (leg) remained sidelined during Wednesday's practice, Dakota Randall of NESN.com reports. Montgomery hasn't practiced since suffering a leg injury last week, but the versatile running back has been spotted on the team's rehab field, an indication that he's progressing toward a return. With Montgomery banged up and with the Patriots managing Rhamondre Stevenson's workload in training camp, Kevin Harris, Pierre Strong and J.J. Taylor have handled added practice reps.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Still sidelined Sunday

Montgomery (leg) didn't participate in Sunday's practice, Chris Mason of The Springfield Republican reports. Montgomery suffered an apparent left leg injury during Thursday's practice and hasn't practiced since. Head coach Bill Belichick called the versatile running back "day-to-day," but it's unclear when he'll be back to full speed. When healthy, Montgomery will try to establish himself in a backfield that features Rhamondre Stevenson and second-year players Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Deemed day-to-day

Montgomery, who suffered an apparent left leg injury during Thursday's practice, was not present for Friday's session, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports. The report notes that after sustaining the injury, Montgomery -- who coach Bill Belichick calls "day-to-day" -- stayed on the field for a half-speed walk-through before exiting Thursday's practice. Once he returns to the field, the versatile Montgomery will look to establish a change-of-pace/pass-catching role in a New England backfield that will be led by Rhamondre Stevenson and also includes second-year players Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Competing for role behind Stevenson

Montgomery is a candidate to serve as a complementary option behind lead back Rhamondre Stevenson during the upcoming season, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports. The 30-year-old missed the final 16 games of the 2022 season, but now that he's moved past his injury woes, Montgomery has caught the eye of head coach Bill Belichick during the Patriots' offseason program. With Damien Harris having moved on to Buffalo this offseason, Montgomery will be competing with second-year players Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris for reps behind Stevenson. It's still possible that the Patriots will add another veteran back to the mix, but if Montgomery ends up emerging as the New England's top option on third downs, he could end up on the PPR radar.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Could be in third-down mix

Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears indicated that Montgomery, who was limited to one game last season due to a shoulder injury, has moved past the issue, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports. Prior to suffering his injury in the team's 2022 season opener, Montgomery appeared poised to handle a third-down role behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Damien Harris (who's now with the Bills). Now that he's healthy again, Montgomery will have a chance to compete for a change-of-pace role behind Stevenson, while James Robinson, Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor also are in the mix to handle complementary backfield touches. If the versatile Montgomery emerges as a key third-down option, a role Fears believes that the 30-year-old has a chance to claim, the 6-foot, 216-pounder could merit fantasy attention in deeper PPR formats this coming season.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Gets shoulder surgery, done for 2022

Montgomery (knee) will miss the remainder of the season after recently undergoing shoulder surgery, Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reports. Montgomery was placed on injured reserve after playing 19 snaps in the team's season-opening loss to the Dolphins. The Patriots haven't provided many updates on his status since then, but Montgomery looks like he'll spend the remainder of the season rehabbing from the shoulder procedure. Montgomery will be due $1.36 million in 2023 and should compete for a change-of-pace role within the New England backfield next offseason, if healthy.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Unlikely to return in Week 6

Montgomery (knee) is not expected to be activated from injured reserve this week, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports. Montgomery was placed on IR with a right knee injury Sept. 13 following the Patriots' Week 1 loss to the Dolphins, but head coach Bill Belichick doesn't expect the running back to return in Week 6. With Damien Harris (hamstring) potentially unavailable for New England's upcoming matchup with the Browns, Pierre Strong, J.J. Taylor and Kevin Harris could see increased roles behind Rhamondre Stevenson.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Heads to IR

The Patriots placed Montgomery on injured reserve Tuesday due to an apparent aggravation of a right knee injury, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. After initially injuring his knee Aug. 26 and turning in only limited participation in practice last week, Montgomery was listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Dolphins. He ultimately gained clearance to play in the Patriots' season-opening 20-7 loss, logging 21 snaps while accounting for 13 yards and New England's only touchdown across five touches (two carries, three receptions). With Montgomery's move to IR ensuring that he'll miss at least the next four games, rookie Pierre Strong or practice-squad running back J.J. Taylor could step in as the third option in a backfield rotation headlined by Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Catches three passes in Week 1

Montgomery was on the field for 21 of a possible 57 snaps on offense in Sunday's 20-7 loss to Miami, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. In the process, Montgomery carried twice for minus-2 yards and caught three of his four targets for 15 yards and a TD. Given that rookie Pierre Strong was inactive Week 1, it looks like Montgomery has a decent grip on the Patriots' change-of-pace duties early on this season, while Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson (two targets Sunday) remain the team's primary early-down options. Looking ahead, Montgomery possesses modest fantasy utility in PPR-friendly formats, with his weekly volume likely to be dependent on varying game plans and flows.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Active for Week 1

Montgomery (knee) is listed as active for Sunday's season opener against the Dolphins, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports. In his regular-season debut with the Patriots, Montgomery, who was a limited practice participant this week, will look to help fill the change-of-pace void (behind top early-down options Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson) in the team's offense created by the retirement of James White. It remains to seen how much volume that will initially yield for Montgomery, with Stevenson potentially factoring into the team's passing game as well, but Pierre Strong being made inactive Sunday suggests that Montgomery may not face limitations against Miami in Week 1.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Questionable for opener

Montgomery (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's season opener against the Dolphins. If he's available Sunday, Montgomery -- who was a limited practice participant this week -- is a candidate to help fill the change-of-pace void created by the retirement of James White. If he's out or limited, however, rookie Pierre Strong could see added snaps behind top early-down options Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson, with Stevenson potentially factoring into the team's passing game as well.
